The Land Beyond

Geographer Jack Ives moved to Canada in 1954, and soon after he played an instrumental role in the establishment of the McGill Sub-Arctic Research Laboratory in central Labrador-Ungava. This fascinating account of his fifty-plus years living and working in the arctic is simultaneously a light-hearted, winning memoir and a call to action on the issues of environmental awareness and conservation that are inextricably intertwined with life in the north. Mixing personal impressions of key figures of the postwar scientific boom with the intellectual drama of field research, The Land Beyond is a memorable depiction of a life in science.

Aboriginal Autonomy and Development in Northern Quebec and Labrador

The Canadian North is witness to some of the most innovative efforts by Aboriginal peoples to reshape their relations with "mainstream" political and economic structures. Northern Quebec and Labrador are particularly dynamic examples of these efforts, composed of First Nations territories that until the 1970s had never been subject to treaty but are subject to escalating industrial demands for natural resources. The essays in this volume illuminate key conditions for autonomy and development: the definition and redefinition of national territories as cultural orders clash and mix; control of resource bases upon which northern economies depend; and renewal and reworking of cultural identity.

Margins of Insecurity

Margins of Insecurity

A number of crises since the end of the Cold War have demonstrated the insecurity of ordinary people in circumstances where states are either unable to provide protection, or are themselves the principle sources of violence. Public opinion has provoked international politicians to recognise a problem in which they should intervene; but it is rare for effective policies to be implemented. Emerging from a series of workshops on the International Security of Marginal Populations, the essays seek solutions which go beyond the traditional emphasis on the interests of the state, and give due weight to the needs of minority populations. Outwitting the State

Outwitting the State

A characteristic response to the imposition of state power by the conquered, oppressed, and powerless is a pattern that Peter Skalnik calls "out-witting the state." This collection of essays challenges the widespread view that the state is a natural holder of authority in society. Using examples of confrontations between European states and polities outside Europe, the authors show that the power model is not universally applicable. Examples from Africa, Oceania, Asia, and North America support this radically different conception of politics. The authors argue that this less confrontational approach to state power is not only possible but desirable. The new and different approach gives ordinary people a chance to achieve political goals without looking to the state.

Advances in Software Engineering

This book contains both relevant real-world research, as well as reviews of different areas of interest in the software engineering literature, such as clone identification. The contents of the various sections will provide a better understanding of known problems and detailed treatment of advanced topics. Consequently, the book consolidates the work and findings from leading researchers in the software research community in key areas such as maintainability, architectural recovery, code analysis, software migration, and tool support.
