This book presents recent advances in global wheat crop research, including the effects of abiotic stresses like high and low temperatures, drought, hypoxia, salinity, heavy metals, nutrient deficiency, and toxicity on wheat production. It also highlights various approaches to alleviate the damaging effects of abiotic stress on wheat as well as advanced approaches to develop abiotic-stress-tolerant wheat crops. Wheat is probably one of the world’s most important cereals; it is a staple food in more than 40 countries, and because of its adaptability is cultivated in almost every region. Global wheat production has more than doubled in the last 50 years due to higher yields. However, despite...

Machine Intelligence and Emerging Technologies

The two-volume set LNICST 490 and 491 constitutes the proceedings of the First International Conference on Machine Intelligence and Emerging Technologies, MIET 2022, hosted by Noakhali Science and Technology University, Noakhali, Bangladesh, during September 23–25, 2022. The 104 papers presented in the proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected from 272 submissions. This book focuses on theoretical, practical, state-of-art applications, and research challenges in the field of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. It will be helpful for active researchers and practitioners in this field. These papers are organized in the following topical sections: imaging for disease detection; pattern recognition and natural language processing; bio signals and recommendation systems for wellbeing; network, security and nanotechnology; and emerging technologies for society and industry.

In 2015 the Goethe-Instituts in Kolkata (India) and Dhaka (Bangladesh) began a collaborative project entitled ‘Inherited Memories’. The project began with a key question that grew out of discussions on memory and history: was there such a thing as a ‘culture of remembrance’ in India, something akin to the Erinnerungskultur in Germany? The question was asked specifically in relation to the Partition of India in 1947: why was it that such a major historical event found little reflection in public memory? Soon, other questions came up: why was it, for example, that whatever memorialising existed was largely in the West, in Punjab, and the Bengal region, which had lived through two parti...

The most common form of severe dementia, Alzheimer’s disease (AD), is a cumulative neurological disorder because of the degradation and death of nerve cells in the brain tissue, intelligence steadily declines and most of its activities are compromised in AD. Before diving into the level of AD diagnosis, it is essential to highlight the fundamental differences between conventional machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL). This work covers a number of photo-preprocessing approaches that aid in learning because image processing is essential for the diagnosis of AD. The most crucial kind of neural network for computer vision used in medical image processing is called a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The proposed study will consider facial characteristics, including expressions and eye movements using the diffusion model, as part of CNN’s meticulous approach to Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Convolutional neural networks were used in an effort to sense Alzheimer’s disease in its early stages using a big collection of pictures of facial expressions.

Asia Regional Synthesis for The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture

The Asia Regional Synthesis for The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture summarizes the state of biodiversity for food and agriculture in the region, based largely on information provided in eight country reports submitted to FAO as part of the reporting process for the report on The State of the World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture. Biodiversity for food and agriculture is the diversity of plants, animals and micro-organisms at genetic, species and ecosystem levels, present in and around crop, livestock, forest and aquatic production systems. It is essential to the structure, functions and processes of these systems, to livelihoods and food security, and t...

Proceedings from the grand inauguration of the project Consortium for Scaling-Up Climate-Smart Agriculture in South Asia (C-SUCSeS)

Driven by the need to produce more food for an ever-increasing population that is further marred with declining and degrading natural resource base, adapting to and mitigating climate change have posed a big challenge. It is an established fact that in agriculture, fertilizers, flooded rice cultivation, energy use in irrigation, tillage, and enteric emissions from ruminant animals are the main contributors of greenhouse gases, which accounts to about one-fourth of the total emissions. The evolution of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) emerged as a scientific response to this multi-headed hydra, which helps achieve higher production with reduced emission. The fact remains that the small farm ho...
