Within translation studies books on translating conceptually dense texts, such as philosophical or theoretical writings, are remarkably few. Although the translation of literature has been a favourite topic for many decades, the translation of theories on literature has been neglected. The phrase ‘theories of translation’ is everywhere, but ‘translation of theories’ is a rare sight. On the other hand, the term ‘translation’ has become a commonplace in literary and cultural studies – yet usually as a rhetorical figure describing the fate of those who struggle between two worlds and two languages, such as migrants or women. Not much attention has been paid to the role of ‘trans...

A Literary Semiotics Approach to the Semantic Universe of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four

Semiotics can be considered as a well-organized signification journey taken among the pages of the work of art. It requires background knowledge related to the field and its analysis tools, as well as careful reading practices in the text to reach the projected destination after stopping over in certain stations. These stations represent meaning intersections where the meaningful formations are articulated to contribute to the generation of the semantic universe of the text. The presentation of such a fictional universe can be complicated because of the nature of the literary work and the language used. With regards to Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, what makes its fiction precious is the masterful acts of the author in both paradigmatic and syntagmatic dimensions. This book conducts a semiotic analysis in order to unfold the enigmatic semantic organization of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four narrative by penetrating the formative structures at various meaning levels of the text.

George Orwell and His Non-Fictions

This book includes a sound critical appreciation of three non-fiction novels written by George Orwell, a clear conscious of a gentlke generation. Of these books, the first deals with the Spanish civil war in which Orwell himself fights together with POUM militias at the front. The second book examines the life of the miners working in an industrial town and their problems under desolate life conditions. The third reports an intellectual but a realistic discussion on the levels of poverty among the plongeurs in Paris and the tramp in London.
