Nanticoke
In June 1748, eighty Nanticoke Indians grounded their canoes in a wilderness along the Susquehanna River in the area that would later be named Nanticoke. While it was first a farming area, coal was later discovered, and by 1825, the first coal mine was in operation. Nanticoke owes its chief growth to the anthracite industry, which provided employment opportunities for thousands of European immigrants. Through their labor and strong work ethic, they established a superb city in which to live a full life. They also left behind a magnificent history of their times. Those times have been preserved in pictorial form and evoke fond memories of Nanticoke.
The Nationalization of Latvians and the Issue of Serfdom
In the second half of the eighteenth century, an intellectual discourse developed in Livonia which shed light on the disastrous social conditions of the indigenous population. This book examines the premise that the resulting "nationalization" of the Latvians occurred in the 1780s and 1790s as a result of a German Enlightenment in Livonia. Johann Gottfried Herder was a philosopher and important intellectual presence in eighteenth-century Germany. Herder's Political Thought examines the work of this significant figure in the context of both historical and contemporary developments in political philosophy. Vicki A. Spencer reveals Herder as one of the first Western philosophers to grapple seriously with cultural diversity without abandoning a commitment to universal values and the first to make language and culture an issue of justice. International Review of Biblical Studies, Volume 49 (2002-2003)
Formerly known by its subtitle “Internationale Zeitschriftenschau für Bibelwissenschaft und Grenzgebiete”, the International Review of Biblical Studies has served the scholarly community ever since its inception in the early 1950’s. Each annual volume includes approximately 2,000 abstracts and summaries of articles and books that deal with the Bible and related literature, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, Pseudepigrapha, Non-canonical gospels, and ancient Near Eastern writings. The abstracts – which may be in English, German, or French - are arranged thematically under headings such as e.g. “Genesis”, “Matthew”, “Greek language”, “text and textual criticism”, “exegetical methods and approaches”, “biblical theology”, “social and religious institutions”, “biblical personalities”, “history of Israel and early Judaism”, and so on. The articles and books that are abstracted and reviewed are collected annually by an international team of collaborators from over 300 of the most important periodicals and book series in the fields covered.
