PEGASUS EPITAPH

This new, revised edition of a unique piece of rock literature opens up the world of California's late sixties music to every reader - and is essential reading for any fan of Arthur Lee and Love. This new edition offers not only updates on fellow Love members, but also Author Michael Stuart Ware's own tribute to Arthur Lee, plus further archive photos from the era not included in previous editions. Michael Stuart Ware was alongside as Lee, at the height of his powers, reached towards unique, unforgettable sounds and created the Love masterpieces cherished by music fans for half a century - but he also saw how drugs and egos can thwart the potential of even the greatest bands. As a cautionary tale of rock band politics, Pegasus Epitaph is as frank and compelling as only an eyewitness account can be, but the author also vividly portrays life away from the studio in a pivotal era in rock music: hanging out in Laurel Canyon, checking out bands and shooting the breeze in the Summer of Love.

Weird Scenes Inside The Canyon

The very strange but nevertheless true story of the dark underbelly of a 1960s hippie utopia. Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists congregated to create much of the music that provided the soundtrack to those turbulent times. Members of bands like the Byrds, the Doors, Buffalo Springfield, the Monkees, the Beach Boys, the Turtles, the Eagles, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Steppenwolf, CSN, Three Dog Night and Love, along with such singer/songwriters as Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, James Taylor and Carole King, lived together and jammed together in the bucolic community nestled in the ...

Love are one of those acts, a bit like Gram Parsons, who are very hip to namecheck as an influence. Their seminal album, Forever Changes, is often cited by many musicians as one of their favorites (it was #40 in Rolling Stone magazine s Top 500 albums) and the band have an aura of the Californian Turn on, tune in, drop out vibe. A hard band to pigeonhole, their music drew on many influences from rock, garage, folk and psychedelia, but they were one of the first racially diverse groups. For such an influential band, surprisingly little has been written about them. This book is a welcome addition therefore, particularly as it is penned by the band s official historian, Bruno Ceriotti. Johnny E...

'Forever Changes' may be thirty-six years old at the time of this writing, but its hermetic fusion of the personal and the political feels more relevant than ever. It speaks to the present in ways that, say, a Jefferson Airplane record never could, whatever the parallels between the late U60s and our contemporary morass.

Widely hailed as a genius, Arthur Lee was a character every bit as colorful and unique as his music. In 1966, he was Prince of the Sunset Strip, busy with his pioneering racially-mixed band Love, and accelerating the evolution of California folk-rock by infusing it with jazz and orchestral influences, a process that would climax in a timeless masterpiece, the Love album Forever Changes. Shaped by a Memphis childhood and a South Los Angeles youth, Lee always craved fame. Drug use and a reticence to tour were his Achilles heels, and he succumbed to a dissolute lifestyle just as superstardom was beckoning. Despite endorsements from the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton, Leess subsequent ca...

101 ALBUMS YOU NEED TO HEAR BEFORE I DIE

Great music is about so much more than just the end product. Very often the stories behind the songs and their creators can be as scintillating as the music itself. This book is about more than just 101 slabs of music you are being advised to listen to. It's about the also-rans and stars that burned out too fast. As a music journalist for many years, the author managed to meet many of his idols - and they provided interesting insights as well as moments of humour. In the first of two volumes, we look at the timeless stories the musicians were telling, and just why they deserve to live forever.
