The Categorization of Spatial Entities in Language and Cognition
Despite a growing interest for space in language, most research has focused on spatial markers specifying the static or dynamic relationships among entities (verbs, prepositions, postpositions, case markings ). Little attention has been paid to the very properties of spatial entities, their status in linguistic descriptions, and their implications for spatial cognition and its development in children. This topic is at the center of this book, that opens a new field by sketching some major theoretical and methodological directions for future research on spatial entities. Brought together linguistic descriptions of spatial systems, formal accounts of linguistic data, and experimental findings from psycholinguistic studies, all couched within a wide cross-linguistic perspective. Such an interdisciplinary approach provides a rich overview of the many questions that remain unanswered in relation to spatial entities, while also throwing a new light on previous research focusing on related topics concerning space and/or the relation between language and cognition.
The Semantics of Dynamic Space in French
Research on the semantics of spatial markers in French is known mainly through Vandeloise’s (1986, 1991) work on static prepositions. However, interest in the expression of space in French goes back to the mid-1970s and focused first on verbs denoting changes in space, whose syntactic properties were related to specific semantic distinctions, such as the opposition between “movement” and “displacement”. This volume provides an overview of recent studies on the semantics of dynamic space in French and addresses important questions about motion expression, among which “goal bias” and asymmetry of motion, the status of locative PPs, the expression of manner, fictive or non-actual motion. Descriptive, experimental and formal or computational analyses are presented, providing complementary perspectives on the main issue. The volume is intended for researchers and advanced students wishing to learn about both spatial semantics in French and recent debates on the representation of motion events in language and cognition.
Beyond Aspectual Semantics
This volume examines the multifaceted nature of (grammatical) aspect. The chapters explore less typical contexts in which aspectual constructions are used, and draw on data from a range of languages, many of them understudied, including several African languages and the sign language Kata Kolok.
Neglected Aspects of Motion-Event Description

Les structures de l'espace linguistique
Ce livre, centre sur les donnees du basque et du francais, est une contribution aux recherches relatives a l'expression de l'espace dans la langue. Une approche formelle en trois niveaux du lexique spatial est tout d'abord proposee (geometrie, fonction, pragmatique), constituant l'arriere-plan des analyses descriptives ulterieures. La seconde partie introduit un cadre theorique pour l'etude des relations de partie a tout et illustre les potentialites de ce dispositif a travers l'examen de plusieurs marqueurs ("genitifs" du basque, verbes prefixes en e du francais, Noms de Localisation Interne...). Chemin faisant, diverses distinctions entre entites spatiales operees par la langue sont mises en evidence. Le troisieme volet de l'ouvrage examine la semantique de deux "relations spatiales" - cas inessif du basque et preposition par du francais - en montrant, ici encore, le role essentiel joue par les connaissances sur les entites. Language-Specific Factors in First Language Acquisition
A growing number of studies have begun to examine the influence of language-specific factors on language acquisition. During language acquisition, German children from six years on use structures that are similar to those of adults in their language group and also encode all semantic components from an early age. In striking contrast, French children up to ten years have difficulties producing some of the complex structures that are necessary for the simultaneous expression of several semantic components. Nonetheless, in addition to these striking cross-linguistic differences, the results of this study also clearly show similar developmental progressions in other respects, suggesting the impact of general developmental determinants.
Issues in Cognitive Linguistics
Cognitive linguistics subsumes diverse theoretical approaches sharing a compatible outlook: namely that language reflects the interaction of social, cultural, psychological, communicative, and functional considerations that can be understood only in the context of cognitive development and processing.
