Published to coincide with an exhibition at Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool, The Water's Edge combines essays, first-person accounts, and stunning photographic images to tell the story of the women who worked, and continue to work, in and around the city's waterfront, or who abandoned urban lifeto earn a living at sea. At the heart of the project are Michelle Sank's remarkable and vibrant portraits, alongside the women's own stories - alternately confident, vulnerable, even otherworldly. Joanne Lacey's introduction reveals the background to this fascinating project and its origins in herown family history. Roy Exley's Afterword also offers some reflections on Michelle Sank's striking photographic practice.

The imagery in The Submerged was produced within Mid-Wales in a coastal and hilly area existing at the end of the railway line. Sank became intrigued by the way both structures and people interacted with the urban and natural make-up of this environment. She was drawn towards a sense of grittiness and resolution within the geological and architectural fabric of the place, something so often mimicked in the light, color, dramatic skies and the human performance within.

I like to think that, when feeling my way carefully through the rituals of passion, the lady in question has pretty much my full attention and very few things will distract me from the job in hand. A murder just outside is one of them . . . The victim, and two other antiques dealers who also came to a sticky end, were all working the same Scottish connection that I had been cultivation, so I decided to make myself scarce for a while. Where better to hide than at the root of the problem in the wilds of Scotland? There may be nothing very Scottish about me but, when my life's on the line, I can blend into the Highlands like a haggis in the heather. It was also the best place to find out why the antiques trade down south had become such a dangerous business.
