The Literature of The Arminian Controversy: Religion, Politics and the Stage focuses on the turbulent dawn of Dutch Golden Age literature, when the debate over the theology of Arminius divided the Republics literary world, acting as a catalyst for literary and cultural change and innovation. The book traces the impact of disputed ideas on grace and predestination in satirical literature, poetry and plays, and analyses the theological and political works of the period as literature, focussing on the rhetoric, tropes and metaphors of politico-religious controversy. Taking into account a wide array of sources, ranging from theological treatises to broadsides and libel poetry, it offers a deeper contextualisation of some of the most canonical works of the period, such as the writings of Grotius, Coornhert, and Joost van den Vondel, the Republics greatest tragic poet, and reconsiders the relationship between literature and intellectual history.
Early modern theatre was a visual matter, even though the authors wrote plays which were mainly meant to be read. But whether they wrote their plays to have them performed or not, authors could use comedies, tragi-comedies or tragedies to influence public opinion, to make a statement in a debate, or to convey explicit or implicit lessons that they carried out or had carried out by linguistic, rhetorical and theatrical means. How explicit they were in expressing their views depended on the characters of the authors or the circumstances in which they wrote. Questions regarding the opinion-forming and opinion-following functions of theatre, the means by which authors and theatre makers expressed their ideas, and the role of theatre and plays in public debate are discussed from various angles. Such questions refer not only to ‘literary’ plays, but also to other forms of theatrical event, such as royal entrances. The present volume, number VII in the series Groningen Studies in Cultural Change, offers a selection of papers presented at the International Conference 'Knowledge and Learning' held in November 2001 in Groningen. The first volume (number V in the series) is entitled Learned Antiquity: Scholarship and Society in the Near east, the Greco-Roman World, and the Early Medieval West, and has been edited by Alasdair A. MacDonald, Michael W. Twomey and Gerrit J. Reinink. The second (volume VI) bears the title Schooling and Scholarship: The Ordering and Reordering of Knowledge in the Western Middle Ages, and has been edited by Alasdair A. MacDonald and Michael W. Twomey. The papers in the present volume, Scholarly Environments: Centres of Learning and Institutional Contexts 1560-1960, written by scholars in such disciplines as science, education and cultural history, treat various matters concerning scholarship in the period from the Renaissance until the mid twentieth century.
The Netherlandish rhetoricians of the sixteenth century have, in the course of the last decades, shed their image of third-rate poets who, lacking all sense of true beauty, were capable only of pompous verbosity and a shallow manipulation of form. The new scholarly assessment has also shed light on the role they played in the cultural and literary life of their time, and it now appears that many of their dramas are well worth staging. Once the sixteenth century was freed from the stigma of being the "preparatory phase" for the Golden Age, the way was clear for thorough studies of the literature produced during the most turbulent period in the history of the Low Countries. This volume contains essays which deal with works written not only in Dutch, but also in French and in New Latin, with topics ranging from the effects of poetic principles on literary practice to the use of poetry as a means for improving society and developing the individual. The unifying thread in these studies is the pivotal importance of rhetoric in all forms of literary expression.
