A investigação esclarece definitivamente os 110 anos de vida dessa história, com as referências de cada partida, incluindo as escalações detalhadas dos adversários e os seus treinadores. O trabalho consumiu dois anos e chegou ao limite. Foram consultados impressos, com prioridade para jornais e revistas oferecidos pela Biblioteca Nacional, além de sites e livros expostos na internet, e os teipes parciais ou completos de mais de três centenas de partidas. A coleção de livros do autor também teve grande importância. Houve ainda frequentes consultas, por e-mail e telefone, no Brasil e no exterior, aos que poderiam fornecer indicações e esclarecimentos.
