Facing Eden

  • Categories: Art

The San Francisco Bay Area boasts one of the richest and most continuous traditions of landscape art in the entire country. Looking back over the past one hundred years, the contributors to this in-depth survey consider the diverse range of artists who have been influenced by the region's compelling union of water and land, peaks and valleys, and fog and sunlight. Paintings, sculpture, graphic arts, photography, landscape architecture, earthworks, conceptual art, and designs in city planning and architecture are all represented. The diversity reflects not just the glories of nature but also an exploration of what constitutes "landscape" in its broadest, most complete sense. Among the more th...

Reading Asian Art and Artifacts

This book begins with the understanding that, in addition to its aesthetic qualities, Asian art and material artifacts are expressive of cultural realities and constitute a 'visible language' with messages that can be read, interpreted, and analyzed. Asian art and artifacts are understood in their contexts, as 'windows' into cultures, and as such can be used as a powerful pedagogical tool in many academic disciplines. The book includes essays by scholars of Asian art, philosophy, anthropology, and religion that focus on objects held in ASIANetwork schools. The ASIANetwork collections are reflective of Asian societies, historical and religious environments, political positions, and economic c...

Global Mobilities

Global Mobilities illustrates the significant engagement of museums and archives with populations that have experienced forced or willing migration: emigrants, exiles, refugees, asylum seekers, and others. The volume explores the role of public institutions in the politics of integration and cultural diversity, analyzing their efforts to further the inclusion of racial and ethnic minority populations. Emphasizing the importance of cross-cultural knowledge and exchange, global case studies examine the conflicts inherent in such efforts, considering key issues such as whether to focus on origins or destinations, as well as whether assimilation, integration, or an entirely new model would be the most effective approach. This collection provides an insight into diverse perspectives, not only of museum practitioners and scholars, but also the voices of artists, visitors, undocumented immigrants, and other members of source communities. Global Mobilities is an often provocative and thought-inspiring resource which offers a comprehensive overview of the field for those interested in understanding its complexities.

Dance Rehearsal explores Philadelphia-born artist Karen Kilimnik's longstanding engagement with historical performance, in particular the romantic story ballets of the nineteenth century. These timeless tales and their protagonists have been a key inspiration for Kilimnik since the beginning of her career. The multi-disciplinary elements that bring the performances and narratives to life, including music, choreography, dance and scenery can be found reflected in the diverse styles and mediums in which Kilimnik has worked. This publication, featuring pieces from 1988 to the present, encompasses this eclectic variety in more than 60 large-scale color reproductions, from figurative drawing and painting to mixed-media mise-en-scéne installations, collage, photography and video. Dance Rehearsal also introduces Kilimnik's more recent forays into set design and choreography and includes texts by editor, critic and curator Melissa E. Feldman and others.

For over four decades, Richard Buswell has trained his camera on the landscape of Montana, with its abandoned and overgrown homesteads and majestic, never-ending skies. In the recent work assembled in this volume, Buswell’s fourth book, his subjects are much more than scattered remains. His black-and-white photographs frame cast-off, common things to reveal abstract patterns in the tradition of twentieth-century modernist photography. As Buswell puts it, his work is “more interpretive and abstract than it is documentary. The images explore the junction where decaying artifacts become visual echoes of the past.” To create a portfolio of images that make us look anew at the West requires a mix of courage and patience, of persistence and imagination. Richard Buswell has shown just these qualities as he has turned a youthful hobby into a powerful means for exploring the past and present of his Montana homeland.
