The Institutionalisation of Evaluation in Europe
This book examines the progress of institutionalisation of evaluation in European countries from various perspectives. It describes both prior developments and current states of evaluation in 16 European countries and across the European Union (EU), focussing on three dimensions, namely the political, social and professional systems. These detailed country reports, which have been written by selected researchers and authors from each of the respective countries, lead to a concluding comparison and synthesis. This is the first of four volumes of the compendium The Institutionalisation of Evaluation to be followed by volumes on the Americas, Africa and Australasia. The overall aim is to provide an interdisciplinary audience with cross-country learning to enable them to better understand the institutionalisation of evaluation in different nations, world regions and different sectors.
Impact Evaluation of Infrastructure Interventions
The focus on results in development agencies has led to increased focus on impact evaluation to demonstrate the effectiveness of development programmes. This book illustrates the broad range of methods available for counterfactual analysis of infrastructure programmes such as establishment, rehabilitation and maintenance of roads, water supply and electrical power plants and grids. Understanding the impact of interventions requires understanding of the context in which the intervention takes place and the channels through which it is expected to occur. For infrastructure interventions it is particularly important to identify the links between the input and the outcomes and impacts because the well-being of people, the ultimate impact, does not change directly as a consequence of the intervention. Therefore impact evaluation of infrastructure programmes typically requires mixing both quantitative and qualitative approaches as illustrated in many of the contribution to this edited volume. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Development Effectiveness.
Extended Statehood in the Caribbean
In this book, the islands' connections with American and European metropolitan centers are considered lifelines, which must be strengthened. The constitutional arrangement is defined as extended statehood, a form of government that is meant to supplement the island government. Circumstances have changed and require a format of analysis that goes beyond the old landscape of 'colonies' and 'independent states.' The objective of this book is to promote a new look at extended statehood in the Caribbean while raising a number of questions relating to the operation of the different extended statehood systems across the region.

Gebaseerd op omvangrijk archiefonderzoek biedt deze studie een inkijk in de besloten burelen van de overheid en de achterkamertjes van de politiek. Zo wordt duidelijk hoe tijdens de wederopbouw boerenorganisaties met behulp van economische modellen koehandel met de melkprijs bedreven. We zien ook hoe ambtenaren van ontwikkelingssamenwerking in hun poging het jongerenprotest buiten het departement te houden het lid op de neus kregen, waarom gevangenissen in de jaren zeventig geen tralies kregen en het milieubeleid in de jaren tachtig werd geïnspireerd door managementgoeroes. Deze vier casestudies leggen de tijdgebonden en ideologische context van het beleid bloot.
