India, Issues in Development

This is a collection of all the reports by the Centre for Policy Alternatives team led by Mohan Guruswamy till April 2006. The reports cover a wide range of subjects and have made a major contribution to the national discussion on critical issues. Several of them such as Redefining Poverty , Economic Growth and Development in West Bengal , The Economic Strangulation of Bihar and FDI in Retail have revealed new dimensions to issues that have contributed greatly to a change of perceptions about them. The reports are primarily meant for the nation s opinion and decision-making elite, such as MP s, government officials and media-persons. They are hence written in a simple, comprehensible and illustrative style. Each report will vastly enrich your understanding of India and some of the problems that beset it.

Chasing the Dragon

Since the early 2000s, India's economic performance has been celebrated and disparaged by different sections of the international policy community. The exuberance of India's own economic managers and business elites culminated in the dramatic failure of the 'India shining' election campaign in 2004. Against such a backdrop, it became imperative to examine India's true position in the world economy and specifically its relative performance vis-¿is China, the default benchmark for contemporary economic success. Chasing the Dragon: Will India Catch Up with China?addresses one of the most relevant questions of contemporary times-whether Asia's two giant economies will reclaim their historical p...

India lives on a day to day and crisis to crisis, and when that is not enough our cricket team does enough to take us high or low, these days mostly low. The long forgotten people of the country are left forgotten. I have written hundreds of columns lamenting over their many problems. Most of them go unheeded. But some do strike an odd chord or two and result in some change. I derive much satisfaction in this and just keep at it. My columns over the years have found a steady and even stubborn bunch of readers. It is due to their persistence that this second volume of columns and essays is being published. The first one, India’s World: Essays on Foreign Policy and Security Issues (Hope India, 2007) restricted itself to just that. This volume is about contemporary domestic issues that have been bunched together on affinity of content. Some of the characters who feature in them are now dead, others have lapsed into their individual fugues, but many still hold centre stage. They are still good for a few lashes.

At the outset, this book must be viewed as a policy relevant document rather than an abstract historical research paper. The authors have revisited the seemingly intractable India-China border dispute from a contemporary conflict resolution perspective and thus are relatively detached from the historical baggage that has so often influenced other commentaries on this controversial subject. The great natural defensive line of northern India, the mighty Himalayas, separating Tibet from north-east India, is a barrier which, by tradition, was impenetrable. This defensive line is embodied by the 1914 Line, India s non-negotiable interest. Thus, from an Indian perspective, it can never be conceive...

China's Quest for Global Dominance

Today, the whole world is watching China with great interest and that includes India. China has been termed – a threat, a challenge, an opportunity, a concern, a competitor, the next superpower, a global player and many more things. It depends, who is looking at it and from where? Its proceedings have been published in the form of a book. This seminar on Chinas Quest for Global Dominance : Reality or Myth is a continuation of the above study.
