Many Asian societies are currently experiencing a transition in diet-related morbidity and mortality. The identification and provision of an optimal diet relevant to all the people living in Asia is an extraordinary challenge as there exists a tremendous diversity in diet, dietary intake patterns, local culture, and nutritional needs. This volume explores the role of ethnic diversity, dietary patterns and genetic adaptation in determining individual nutrient requirements throughout the life-cycle. Major Topics in Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes (TD1) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in children and can occur at any age. Incidences of T1D have steadily increased worldwide, and it is largely considered an autoimmune disorder resulting from the specific destruction of pancreatic beta-cells producing insulin. However, T1D pathophysiology is still not completely understood, and although insulin and other therapies ameliorate the manifestations of the disease, no cure is currently available. This book has been written by widely acknowledged experts, with each chapter providing unique information on emerging aspects of T1D. Because a large body of information has been available regarding T1D, this book highlights lesser explored topics linked to the subject using important and recent knowledge that presages directions for further research. Current possibilities to forestall diabetic complications are also explored.
Prevention of Blindness from Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes mellitus is an important public health problem worldwide, and more than 75% of patients who have had diabetes mellitus for more than 20 years will have some sort of retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy correlates with the duration of diabetes; thus with increasing life expectancy, diabetic retinopathy and the ensuing blindness will tend to increase. In view of the increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus and diabetic retinopathy throughout most of the world, a consultation on prevention of blindness from diabetes mellitus was convened by the World Health Organization to review the current status of diabetic retinopathy care and to define approaches to screening, early detection and management in populations in different settings. This publication reports on the findings of the consultation and provides recommendations and guidelines for the prevention and care of blindness from diabetes mellitus.
