The Upstairs Room

'An incredible read. Clever, chilling, I couldn't put it down' Joanna Cannon, author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep In Kate Murray-Browne's debut, Eleanor and Richard have stretched themselves to the limit to buy the perfect home. But the cracks are already starting to show. Eleanor is unnerved by the eerie atmosphere in the house and she is convinced it is making her ill. Their two young daughters are restless and unsettled. Richard, on the other hand, is more preoccupied with Zoe, their alluring young lodger, who is also struggling to feel at home. As Eleanor's symptoms intensify, she becomes determined to unravel the mystery of the family who lived in the house before them. Who were the Ashworths, and why is the name Emily written hundreds of times on the walls of the upstairs room? Beautifully written and impossibly to put down, The Upstairs Room is a startling contemporary ghost story and a novel about memory, loneliness, desire and love - the things that haunt us all.

After the initial euphoria, one of the potholes along the road as we transition from work to retirement may be the need to discover a new purpose to fill the sudden void. Helpful ideas may be buried in a closet, an attic, or wherever else you store your personal artifacts. My Father's Letters: Connecting Past to Present shows how re-evaluating my father's writings eventually illuminated my own life trajectory. The letters chronicle two distinct periods: his days as a combat infantryman in World War II Europe, and-30 years later-as an accountant tethered to a desk job at a small Midwestern canning company. Whether in France or rural Illinois, my father Glenn Browne Jr. always shared his experiences with candor, wit, and wisdom. My Father's Letters serves as a reminder of the unique qualities of personal correspondence, and how it can offer new insights into our own lives-past, present, and future.

The second edition of Understanding Search Engines: Mathematical Modeling and Text Retrieval follows the basic premise of the first edition by discussing many of the key design issues for building search engines and emphasizing the important role that applied mathematics can play in improving information retrieval. The authors discuss important data structures, algorithms, and software as well as user-centered issues such as interfaces, manual indexing, and document preparation. Readers will find that the second edition includes significant changes that bring the text up to date on current information retrieval methods. For example, the authors have added a completely new chapter on link-structure algorithms used in search engines such as Google, and the chapter on user interface has been rewritten to specifically focus on search engine usability. To reflect updates in the literature on information retrieval, the authors have added new recommendations for further reading and expanded the bibliography. In addition, the index has been updated and streamlined to make it more reader friendly.
