Beyond A Reasonable Doubt

In Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, N. Sivanandan, one of the longest-serving interpreters in Singapore’s judiciary, gives an insight into the work of a court interpreter. During his twenty years in the High Court and more than thirty years in the Subordinate Courts (now the State Courts), Sivanandan has interpreted in lengthy criminal cases — mostly murder, rape and robbery — and long, complicated civil trials before High Court judges, many with formidable reputations. Here are interesting cases that show what it is like standing next to the witness box and giving voice to the witness or litigant in a courtroom filled with their loved ones, judges, prosecuting officers and defence lawyers. This collection of experiences is enlivened by personal stories of the men on the bench, and life in the early days when the courts were situated in different areas and travelling between courts was itself an experience!

Focusing on ways in which cultural nationalism has influenced both the production and critical reception of texts, Salgado presents a detailed analysis of eight leading Sri Lankan writers - Michael Ondaatje, Romesh Gunasekera, Shyam Selvadurai, A. Sivanandan, Jean Arasanayagam, Carl Muller, James Goonewardene and Punyakante Wijenaike – to rigorously challenge the theoretical, cultural and political assumptions that pit ‘insider’ against ‘outsider’, ‘resident’ against ‘migrant’ and the ‘authentic’ against the ‘alien’. By interrogating the discourses of territoriality and boundary marking that have come into prominence since the start of the civil war, Salgado works to define a more nuanced and sensitive critical framework that actively reclaims marginalized voices and draws upon recent studies in migration and the diaspora to reconfigure the Sri Lankan critical terrain.

How do race and class intersect to shape the identities and experiences of Black middle-class parents and their children? What are Black middle-class parents’ strategies for supporting their children through school? What role do the educational histories of Black middle-class parents play in their decision-making about their children’s education? There is now an extensive body of research on the educational strategies of the white middle classes but a silence exists around the emergence of the Black middle classes and their experiences, priorities, and actions in relation to education. This book focuses on middle-class families of Black Caribbean heritage. Drawing on rich qualitative dat...

Does the concept of ethnicity divide the oppressed or unite minorities? Is the term `community' a dangerous fiction? What are the relations between the liberal capitalist democratic state and racialized minority groups? The contributors to this book confront and discuss these questions, bringing together ideas on urban social theory, contemporary cultural change and analysis of racial surbordination in order to explore the relationship between racism, the city and the state. The book concentrates on the urban context of the process of racialization, demonstrating that the city provides the institutional framework for racial segregation, a key process whereby racialization has been reproduced...
