Interviewers' Deviations in Surveys
Survey data are used in many disciplines including Social Sciences, Economics and Psychology. Interviewers' behaviour might affect the quality of such data. This book presents the results of new research on interviewers' motivation and behaviour. A substantial number of contributions address deviant behaviour, methods for assessing the impact of such behaviour on data quality and tools for detecting faked interviews. Further chapters discuss methods for preventing undesirable interviewer effects. Apart from specific methodological contributions, the chapters of the book also provide a unique collection of examples of deviant behaviour and its detection - a topic not overly present in literature despite its substantial prevalence in survey field work. The volume includes 13 peer reviewed papers presented at an international workshop in Rauischholzhausen in October 2011.
Exploring Interconnectedness
This volume explores the socio-cultural and media background of a critical and ongoing political challenge: the complex entanglement between European integration and strong national agendas in the context of globalisation. It does so using educational media - both textbooks and digital media - as sites of cultural contestation to enquire into the intricate relationships around national and European identities and aspects of students’ knowledge and reception. Using a variety of methods and technologies, the chapters analyse identity constructions present in educational media discourses, embedded as they are in their national and European contexts and as both the catalysts and products of their time. Advance Translation as a Means of Improving Source Questionnaire Translatability?
It is widely recognised that optimum translation quality is often difficult to achieve owing to problems in the source text. For large-scale cross-cultural surveys source questionnaires need to be translated into multiple target languages in order to produce comparable data across participating countries and cultures. ‘Advance translations’ have been applied in such surveys to improve the translatability of source questionnaires. The author used a think-aloud study to test the usefulness of advance translation into French and German. The study involved experienced professional questionnaire translators and applied qualitative and quantitative analysis. The study confirmed the usefulness of advance translation, at least for the languages and source texts used.
Survey of Teachers in Pre-primary Education (STEPP)
The present publication documents the achievements and lessons learned from the first phase of the Survey of Teachers in Pre-primary Education (STEPP) project, implemented by UNESCO from 2016 to 2019, with the participation of seven countries, namely, the Dominican Republic, Ghana, Indonesia, Namibia, the Philippines, Togo, and Viet Nam. It is the first international survey for low-and-middle-income countries designed to collect information that is known to affect the quality of pre-primary education from pre-primary teachers and centre heads. The collected information concerns training and professional development, pedagogical and professional practices, working conditions and job satisfaction, and characteristics of pre-primary personnel and the settings in which they work. The survey offers a valuable opportunity for teachers and centre heads to share views about their practice and needs. It seeks to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement as well as commonalities and differences across participating countries, which will inform policy discussions and development of measures on how to strengthen the quality of pre-primary teachers' work. Handbuch Methoden der empirischen Sozialforschung
Das Handbuch ist das erste im deutschen Sprachraum, in dem qualitative und quantitative Methoden gleichberechtigt dargestellt werden und in dem systematisch nach Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschieden hinsichtlich Problemen, Prinzipien, Vorgehensweisen, Standards und Gütekriterien für beide Forschungstraditionen gefragt wird. Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, diskutieren ausgewiesene Experten in 112 Beiträgen den aktuellen Stand der Forschung und bieten Forschenden, Lehrenden und Studierenden einen detaillierten Überblick über die verschiedenen Methoden der empirischen Sozialforschung.
