Social Networks and Migration

In Far West Nepal - an area extremely impoverished also by Nepalese standards - labour migration to India has been an integral part of the livelihood strategies of the majority of people for several generations. This research is based on case studies among male and female migrants in Delhi coming from four villages of Far West Nepal. The analysis focuses on selected aspects of the migrants' daily lives, such as working and living conditions, management of loans and savings, and remittance transfer. It was found, that the whole migration process is mainly facilitated by transnational kin and friendship networks. Negotiating Local Governance

The Center for Development Research (ZEF) is an international and interdisciplinary research institute of the University of Bonn, Germany. Local governance of natural resources implies the transfer of administrative duties from the national to the regional level, as well as the day-to-day management by local users. The case studies range from forests in Vietnam and Africa, African wetlands, to water in Afghanistan and land in Malaysia. The book illustrates the dynamics in the local arena under consideration of national administrative and legal re-organization and analyses the dynamics of this conflict-prone interface.

Developing the Global South

For four decades the UN has attempted to foster development in the countries of the Southern hemisphere. The book provides a synopsis of these efforts, from the Brandt Commission Report to Boutros Boutros Ghali's Agenda for Development. It presents opposing arguments in parceling responsibility for the growing gap between the North and the South and details the Millennium Development Goals and assesses their successes and failures so far. Prof. Milkias provides suggestions for closing the gap, for removing the debt burden that is currently crushing the nations of the South, and for relieving the poverty, ignorance and disease that plague so much of humanity.

African Floodplains in semi-arid areas are important for local livelihoods as they harbor many common-pool resources such as fisheries, pasture, wildlife, veldt products, water and land for irrigation. However, in many of these areas resources are under pressure. This book is presenting seven case studies from Mali, Cameroon, Tanzania, Zambia and Botswana based on anthropological fieldwork (2002-08) and explores how these common-pool resources have been managed in pre-colonial, colonial and postcolonial times. The major focus of the study is how institutional change has contributed to resource management problems and offers a comparative analysis based on the New Institutionalist approach (Jean Ensminger, Elinor Ostrom), which is combined with a special focus on ideology, discourse and narratives while focusing on conflict and power issues. With a foreword by Elinor Ostrom. This book has received the Environmental Research Award 2011 of the University of Bern, Switzerland.
