When the world is turned upside down, who can you trust? Cambridge, England - a professor with links to Iran's nuclear programme is found dead on a park bench, a victim of poisoning by persons unknown. At the same time, in New York, USA, a leading cardiologist is killed in an apparent hit-and-run. And in Hamburg, Germany, a successful academic publisher is shot dead on a backstreet. What links the deaths is that the victims were all prominent Iranian émigrés, and members of the Tehran Committee, an underground dissident movement. British Secret Intelligence Service agent Sebastian Friend is tasked by 'C' to seek out who was responsible for these murders, a mission which at first seems deceptively simple. But as with so many things in the shadowy world of espionage, all is not what it seems. Friend finds himself in a battle for survival as he follows the trail from London to Tehran and back, untangling a complex web which could throw the entire established world order on its head.

Originally published in 2004. The collapse of the USSR and the emergence of 15 new states from its ashes presents another challenge to the global economy: how to reintegrate the post-Soviet space into the international economy. The spread of liberal market ideology and integration of national economic spaces into a global marketplace faces unique difficulties in the former USSR. This insightful volume explains these challenges, showing how Soviet legacies have worked against a smooth re-entry of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus into the global economy. It also demonstrates how and why global economic forces have had very uneven effects in the area, how the area differs from other parts of the post-communist world where reintegration has proceeded more smoothly, and what the future prospects and political implications are for the region in the global economy.

Ideology and the Collapse of the Soviet System

'. . . this is an excellent book which sheds considerable light upon the role of ideology, particularly in the last years of the Soviet Union.' - Graeme Gill, Europe - Asia Studies '. . . this work is a serious attempt to bring ideology back into discussions about the end of the Soviet Union.' - Bartholomew Goldyn, Slovo This innovative book offers a critical history of the development of Soviet ideology, discussing its centrality to Soviet politics and the destructive effect that it had on the Gorbachev reforms. Neil Robinson analyses the nature and historical evolution of Soviet ideology between 1917 and 1985 to demonstrate the structural importance of Soviet ideological discourse and the uncertain place that it allocated to the communist party in the Soviet political system. On the basis of this analysis, Dr Robinson provides a fresh interpretation of Gorbachev's political reforms. He describes the ideological dynamic that underwrote the development of perestroika, how Gorbachev's ideas on democratization sent contradictory messages to the communist party, and how this stimulated opposition to perestroika from party cadres and Soviet society.

Avro Shackleton

Initially projected as a maritime reconnaissance version of the Lincoln bomber, itself a development of the famous wartime Lancaster which saw post-war service in a General/Maritime Reconnaissance role, (see Flight Craft No 4), the Avro Shackleton, (named after the polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton) was a completely new design, powered by four Rolls Royce Griffon 57 engines driving six blade contra-rotating propellers.Split into three main sections, this latest Flight Craft title, perfectly timed to coincide with the release of the first examples of the eagerly awaited new tool 1/72 scale Airfix kit, offers a concise history of the Shackleton's development and operational career from the ...

Contemporary Russian Politics

Vladimir Putin’s return to the Kremlin for a fourth presidential term in 2018 has seen Russian democracy weaken further and Russia’s relations with the West deteriorate seriously. Yet, within Russia, Putin’s position remains unchallenged and his foreign policy battles have received widespread public support. But is Putin as safe as his approval ratings lead us to believe? And how secure is the regime that he heads? In this new book, Neil Robinson places contemporary Russian politics in historical perspective to argue that Putin’s regime has not overcome the problems that underpinned the momentous changes in twentieth-century Russian history when the country veered from tsarism to Sov...

Long Promised Road

On Wednesday February 2nd 2000, in the drizzle and the gloom of a wintry Dutch dawn, Neil Robinson stepped off a P&O ferry in Rotterdam and took the first, confident steps of a journey that was supposed to take him all the way to Istanbul on foot. It was at this point that things began to go seriously wrong. Recurrent tendinitis, a severely strained achilles, the worst 'flu epidemic to hit the Odenwald in living memory and more blisters than a warehouse full of bubble-wrap all played their part in a journey which was destined, as most great journeys are, never to go quite according to plan.

Hawker Hurricane and Sea Hurricane

This fully illustrated volume examines the legendary RAF fighter with full details on its WWII service and design modifications. The Hawker Hurricane was aeronautical engineer Sidney Camm's masterpiece. The fighter entered Royal Air Force service in 1937 and quickly became one of the most important aircraft in Britain's military arsenal—especially in the first three years of the Second World War. It served in every wartime theatre, from Norway and France, to the Battle of Britain, the defense of Malta, the campaigns in the Western Desert, the Russian Front, and in the Far East where it saw service until the end of hostilities. Martin Derry offers a concise yet informative history of the Hurricane's development, operational career and design improvements, including many contemporary photographs with detailed captions; a 16-page color illustration section offering profiles and 2-views of 48 separate aircraft; and finally a section prepared by master maker Tony O'Toole, listing and illustrating the plastic model kits of the Hurricane available in all scales.
