Neri Pozza nasce a Vicenza il 5 agosto 1912 da Ugo Pozza, scultore antifascista (1882-1945), e da Redenta Volpe (1887-1950) che da ragazza lavorò nella nota sartoria vicentina delle sorelle Dionisi. Nel 1938 fonda con i suoi amici, una piccola brigata di «teste calde» tenuta d’occhio dalla polizia fascista, le edizioni dell’Asino Volante per dare alle stampe La gaia gioventù, una raccolta di poesie di Antonio Barolini. Nel 1941 dà vita a una nuova sigla editoriale, Il Pellicano, e nel 1942 pubblica la fortunata antologia Saffo e altri lirici greci, curata da Manara Valgimigli, che conosce ben tre edizioni.
