The Poetry Corner

The first half of this book glitters like a mine full of gems - that is, the author spins off in quick succession idea after idea about what poetry is and how writing poetry can be taught. Quoting countless poems to illustrate his points, he tosses out useful advice about evoking poetic writing, developing language precision, and sharing poetic writing. These discussions are annotated in the back of the book with references to 50 writing starters on reproducible handouts Grades 4-6. Bibliography. Illustrated. Good Year Books. 115 pages.

Informed by the belief that critical pedagogy must move beyond the classroom if it is to be truly effective, this essay collection makes clear how cultural practices--as portrayed in film, sports, and in the classroom itself--enable cultural studies to deepen its own political possibilities and to construct diverse geographies of identity, representation and place. Contributors: Henry A. Giroux, Ava Collins, Nancy Fraser, Carol Becker, bell hooks, Michael Eric Dyson, Roger I. Simon, Chandra Talpede Mohanty, Simon Watney, Michele Wallace, Peter McLaren, David Trend, Abdul R. JanMohamed and Kenneth Mostern.

"Schiro (Boston College) has written a text that examines curriculum theory for experience and pre-service educators with the purpose of understanding educational philosohpies or ideologies that they are likely to encounter in their teaching." —H.B. Arnold, CHOICE "The book provides readers with a clear, sympathetic and unbiased understanding of the four conflicting visions of curriculum that will enable them to more productively interact with educators who might hold different beliefs. The book stimulates readers to better understand their own beliefs and also to provide them with an understanding of alternate ways of thinking about the fundamental goals of education" —SIRREADALOT.ORG "...

Often considered irredeemably conservative, the US working class actually has a rich history of revolt. Rebel Rank and File uncovers the hidden story of insurgency from below against employers and union bureaucrats in the late 1960s and 1970s. From the mid-1960s to 1981, rank-and-file workers in the United States engaged in a level of sustained militancy not seen since the Great Depression and World War II. Millions participated in one of the largest strike waves in US history. There were 5,716 stoppages in 1970 alone, involving more than 3 million workers. Contract rejections, collective insubordination, sabotage, organized slowdowns, and wildcat strikes were the order of the day. Workers targeted much of their activity at union leaders, forming caucuses to fight for more democratic and combative unions that would forcefully resist the mounting offensive from employers that appeared at the end of the postwar economic boom. It was a remarkable era in the history of US class struggle, one rich in lessons for today's labor movement.
