Find out how a Nottingham foodbank became a community of hope and discover why this model of developing social action can bring the kingdom of God to people today. Christian-led social action ministries make a huge contribution to society. But how do we develop new communities where Jesus is known and loved from these activities? Tracing the story of his own experience working with a foodbank that expanded in many directions, Nigel Adams shares how Hope House in Nottingham offers such an inclusive welcome to all that it has grown into a community of hope. Combining theological insights with practical application, Nigel reveals that when God's people unite to show compassion to those in need,...

The Stately Trains Collection

Stately Trains was born out of one man's passion for vintage carriages. Stephen Middleton was brought up in a railway family. His father, grandfather and maternal grandfather all worked for railway companies from pre-grouping through to the British Railways era after nationalisation. His father had a First Class pass for rail travel, thus it is no surprise that Middleton junior experienced regular luxury travel on East Coast Pullmans between Yorkshire and London. At the age of five he longed to be a steward working on the Pullman cars. Fate took him in a different direction but that yearning did not leave him and in 1992, after seeing an advertisement in Steam Railway magazine, his enthusias...

Railways and Recollections - the Fairbourne Railway

The Fairbourne Railway has run from Fairbourne village to Penrhyn Point since 1895. The Beginnings With the arrival of the Cambrian Coast Railway there were schemes to develop the area for tourism. There were several horse drawn construction tramways in the area. The tramway that was used to construct the village became the Fairbourne Railway. Beginning life at 2 foot gauge, the line was converted to a 15 inch gauge steam railway in 1916 and played an important part in the development of th...

Talyllyn Railway Recollections Part 3

The Talyllyn Railway is a remarkable survivor from a long past industrial age. It was built and opened in 1865 to carry slate from the Bryn Eglwys Slate Quarry in the hills above Abergynolwyn village to Tywyn (then Towyn) from where it was shipped all around the world. The first passenger train ran in 1866 and the line runs from Tywyn (on the coast of Cardigan Bay) inland for 71/4 miles to Nant Gwernol. The slate traffic ceased in 1946 after a serious rock fall in the quarry. In 1950 the line's owner (Sir Henry Haydn Jones) died and the future of the railway looked very uncertain because it had been losing money for some years. However, a group of enthusiasts sought to prevent the line's clo...
