This Element presents the philosophical contributions of Nísia Floresta, a feminist philosopher of education from the 19th century in early post-colonial Brazil, who defended abolition and indigenous rights. Focusing on five central works (Direitos, Lágrima, Opúsculo, Páginas, and Woman), it shows them connected by a critique of colonialism grounded on feminist principles. Influenced by the practical Cartesianism of Poulain de la Barre through the pamphlets of Sophia, Floresta applies to the social structures the feminist principle that reason has no gender, arguing that a nation's civilizational level depends on whether natural equality is expressed in terms of social rights. Describing the suffering experienced by women, indigenous people, and the black enslaved population, she defends education as a strategy against colonialism. As such, education should aim towards physical and intellectual emancipation, restoring the lost dignity of individuals. Floresta's works thus foreground slavery and colonization as events that shaped philosophical modernity.

Nísia Floresta Brasileira Augusta (1810-85) published prolifically in Brazil and Europe on the position of women and other subjects central to Brazilian national identity after independence. As such she is a hugely significant figure in the development of women's writing and feminist discourse in Brazil, yet this book is the first full length study of her work to be published in English. Conselhos à minha filha , de Nisia Floresta é um marco da literatura brasileira por ser a primeira obra de autoria feminina publicada no país, em 1842. O livro que à primeira vista pode parecer seguir a tradição da prosa moralista, com intenção doutrinária, configurada em um manual de conduta, foi escrita pela autora para sua filha, Livia, e revela-se como um manifesto feminista, que defende a educação e a emancipação feminina em uma época em que a sociedade patriarcal não encontrava oposição. Escrito em formato em formato epistolar, a carta escrita de mãe para filha em tom afetuoso elenca os direitos e virtudes das mulheres no mundo oitocentista, sem deixar de alertar sobre os perigos de relações falsas e a importância das boas escolhas. Esta reedição, baseada na 2a. edição do livro, publicada em 1845, teve a ortografia atualizada e conta com notas explicativas, para termos e palavras fora de uso.
