A History of Population Health

Mackenbach offers a broad-sweeping study of the spectacular changes in people’s health in Europe since the early 18th century. Most of the 40 specific diseases covered in this book show a fascinating pattern of ‘rise-and-fall’, with large differences in timing between countries. Using a unique collection of historical data and bringing together insights from demography, economics, sociology, political science, medicine, epidemiology and general history, it shows that these changes and variations did not occur spontaneously, but were mostly man-made. Throughout European history, changes in health and longevity were therefore closely related to economic, social, and political conditions, with public health and medical care both making important contributions to population health improvement. KMU-vital
KMU-vital ist ein webbasiertes Programm für betriebliche Gesundheitsförderung (BGF) in kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen. Es wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit namhaften BGF-Anbietern in der Schweiz entwickelt und unter wissenschaft-licher Begleitung in zehn Pilotbetrieben getestet. Das Buch vermittelt zunächst Hintergrundinformationen zur Entstehungs-geschichte, theoretischen Basis und zum Entwicklungsprozess von KMU-vital. Als praxisrelevantes Handbuch unterstützt es die konkrete Umsetzung betrieblicher Gesundheitsförderung über alle Phasen hinweg. Anhand von zehn Modulen werden alle Schritte von der Betriebsanalyse über die Strategie-entwicklung bis zur Umsetzung der BGF-Massnahmen und deren begleitenden Evaluation aufgezeigt. Peripheral Memories
After a period of intense work on national memory cultures, we are observing a growing interest in memory both as a social and an individual practice. Memory studies tend to focus on a particular field of memory processes, namely those connected with war, persecution and expulsion. In this sense, the memory - or rather the trauma - of the Holocaust is paradigmatic for the entire research field. The Holocaust is furthermore increasingly understood as constitutive of a global memory community which transcends national memories and mediates universal values. The present volume diverges from this perspective by dealing also with everyday subjects of memory. This allows for a more complete view of the interdependencies between public and private memory and, more specifically, public and family memory.
