Sustainability Sustainability is to become the guiding principle of social action and economic activity. At the same time, its ways and means are far from clear. As a holistic praxis, sustainability must combine technical and material as well as social, economic, ecological and also ethical strategies, which have multiple complex interactions and all too often also conflicting goals and priorities. In no other field can these be better observed, addressed and influenced than in architecture and building. "Building Better – Less – Different" Each volume of "Building Better – Less – Different" details two fundamental areas of sustainability and explores their specific dynamics and inte...
This book reflects and expands on the current trends in the Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) industries to respond to the unfolding climate and biodiversity crisis. Shifting away from the traditional focus, narrowly centered on efficiency, the book presents a variety of approaches to move the AEC community from an approach that presents new challenges in all areas of the industry, from a linear, extractive paradigm to circular and regenerative one. The book presents contributions including research papers and case studies, providing a comprehensive overview of the field as well as perspectives from related disciplines, such as computer science, biology and material science. The chapter authors were invited speakers at the 8th Design Modelling Symposium “Towards Radical Regeneration”, which took place at the University of the Arts in Berlin in September 2022.
We live in a time when 3D printing has matured from a hobbyist and prototyping tool to a technology with potential to disrupt entire industries in and around the built environment. The developments in additive manufacturing are transforming architecture and design no less than they impact engineering and construction. The book portrays the rapid advances in research and industrial processes that have paved the road for this upheaval. In five chapters that cover historical development, engineering aspects, the digital design process, interactions with other technologies and potential for functionalization through additive manufacturing, the editors have curated a text that illustrates how a complex network of actors inspires and influences each other to make thistechnological transformation possible. The book follows the trail of scientists who prove the technology's viability and documents design explorations, prototypes and entire buildings that are demonstrating their readiness for the commercial market.

The “2019 DigitalFUTURES — The 1st International Conference on Computational Design and Robotic Fabrication (CDRF 2019)” provides an international platform for advanced scientific research papers on the digital technology of architectural design and construction. The themes of the papers include, but are not limited to, architectural theories, tools, methods and procedures in material intelligence, data intelligence; computational intelligence, and robotic intelligence.
This book reflects and expands on the current trend in the building industry to understand, simulate and ultimately design buildings by taking into consideration the interlinked elements and forces that act on them. Shifting away from the traditional focus, which was exclusively on building tasks, this approach presents new challenges in all areas of the industry, from material and structural to the urban scale. The book presents contributions including research papers and case studies, providing a comprehensive overview of the field as well as perspectives from related disciplines, such as computer science. The chapter authors were invited speakers at the 7th Symposium “Impact: Design With All Senses”, which took place at the University of the Arts in Berlin in September 2019.
The book contains the papers developed from the presentations at the Distributed Intelligence in Design Symposium, held in Salford in May 2009. In this context, Distributed Intelligence refers to the interdisciplinary knowledge of a range of different individuals in different organisations, with different backgrounds and experience, and the symposium discussed the media, technologies and behaviours required to support their successful collaboration. The book focusses on: how parametric and generative design media can be coupled with and managed alongside Building Information Modelling tools and systems how the cross-disciplinary knowledge is distributed and coordinated across different softw...
The research described in this thesis focuses on the production and use of additive manufactured silicate ceramic (clay) products in construction. Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a technology that facilitates realising products by selective placement of material in subsequent layers. It is a technology that emerged in the 1980’s and has been adopted by many industries for prototyping and the realisation of special or individualised products, which cannot be made by use of common production processes or benefit economically by the use of AM. The research shows a broad overview of AM for clay. It describes the evolution of brickmaking, how clay building products can benefit from an AM process, which production process could meet the defined demands regarding the final product, and which characteristics the printed clay products have.
The book provides new perspectives from leading researchers accentuating and examining the central role of the built environment in conceiving and implementing multifaceted solutions for the complex challenges of our understanding of planetary resources and circularity, revealing critical potentials for architecture and design to contribute in more informed and long-term ways to the urgent transition of our society. The book offers a compilation of peer-reviewed papers that uniquely connects knowledge broadly across practice and academia; from the newest technologies and methods such as the role of digital modelling, analysis, and fabrication in circular design, i.e. material passports, cybe...
