The majority of the Wise family papers consist of correspondence between family members during the United States (U.S.) Civil War (1861-1865), primarily Oliver Wise and his siblings: brothers Harrison and Franklin, and sisters Eliza Aultman and Mary Ann. Mary Ann Frances Wise received many of the letters, but did not write any of them. A few letters from other contributors include an aunt, Catherine Lutes; a young related soldier named Hiram Wise who died in 1863; and a few friends and acquaintances. The letters describe in great detail the living conditions and movement of each soldier-sibling before, during, and after the war, especially the battle movement of Oliver's unit, the 7th Ohio Infantry Regiment. The correspondence also highlights the daily routines and thought-processes of the civilian family members left behind during the war years. There is one letter to their unidentified father from Oliver Wise. The most recent letter in the collection, dated 10 January 1878, is from Harrison Wise to his nephew. The collection also includes a news clipping from circa 1965 regarding Michael Wise France (most likely a descendant of Oliver Wise).

Improving the Energy Performance of Buildings

This study examines how policies to increase energy efficiency in buildings in the European Union and Australia have worked and draws implications for the design of similar public policies for the United States. It appears that effective policies to promote energy efficiency can be devised using information disclosure, building codes, financial incentives, and benchmarking. Insights are presented to help designers of analogous U.S. policies.
