Dette er en beretning om Svanemerkets første tretti år, skrevet i kronologisk orden med korte kapitler som hver for seg skal illustrere ulike aspekter av ordningen. Det er få områder av samfunnslivet hvor det har vært prestert så mye tåkeprat som innenfor miljøvern. Kanskje fordi det er så enkelt å være enige om målene, men så vanskelig å finne de rette løsningene, og leve som man prediker. Hos Svanemerket har man gjort jobben fra dag én, ved å stille konkrete målbare krav til miljøprestasjon og gjøre miljø til et konkurransefortrinn. Det har vært konflikter og uenighet, men ingen kan bestride at miljømerking har ført til betydelige miljøforbedringer. Norden med 30 millioner innbyggere, utgjør verdens tolvte største økonomi, og det gjør en forskjell når næringslivet skal gjøre sine produktendringer og markedsfremstøt. Merket er en suksess langt ut over Nordens grenser.
