The Foundations of Texan Philanthropy

The Lone Star State has produced not only revolutionary heroes and cowboy legends, but also larger-than-life promoters of philanthropic activity. The Foundations of Texan Philanthropy, the first systematic study of the origins of foundation philanthropy in early twentieth-century Texas, chronicles the fortunes, motivations, and benefactions of affluent Texans who pioneered organized giving for the public good. In the three decades following the creation of the George W. Brackenridge Foundation in 1920, donors established approximately 180 private, philanthropic institutions. These charitable-minded organizations funded medical research, established educational scholarships, and supported community projects. In addition to the Brackenridge Foundation, this book features George B. Dealey and the Dallas Foundation, Jesse Jones and the Houston Endowment, Miss Ima and the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, the Amon G. Carter Foundation, and the Conference of Southwest Foundations, which united the many foundations in the region. The Foundations of Texan Philanthropy balances personal and family stories with the missions and financial operations of the foundations they established. The

In its rich detail, this book provides the first comprehensive history of the agricultural development of the Oregon Country. Based on extensive research in Hudsons's Bay Company documents, missionary records, and military and private papers, this book traces the crucial transition of the Pacific Northwest from a fur-trading outpost to an agricultural settlement -- a process which also saw the shift from British to American jurisdiction in the area.

Strangers & Pilgrims

Margaret Meuse Clay, who barely escaped a public whipping in the 1760s for preaching without a license; "Old Elizabeth," an ex-slave who courageously traveled to the South to preach against slavery in the early nineteenth century; Harriet Livermore, who spoke in front of Congress four times between 1827 and 1844_these are just a few of the extraordinary women profiled in this, the first comprehensive history of female preaching in early America. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Catherine Brekus examines the lives of more than a hundred female preachers_both white and African American_who crisscrossed the country between 1740 and 1845. Outspoken, visionary, and sometimes contentious, these women stepped into the pulpit long before twentieth-century battles over female ordination began. They were charismatic, popular preachers, who spoke to hundreds and even thousands of people at camp and revival meetings, and yet with but a few notable exceptions_such as Sojourner Truth_these women have essentially vanished from our history. Recovering their stories, Brekus shows, forces us to rethink many of our common assumptions about eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American culture.

Second Stories

Second Stories offers an innovative reexamination of selected texts by seven major figures in American literature. Combining close reading with a powerful ideological argument, Cynthia Jordan demonstrates that a concern with the patriarchal politics of language informs both the thematic content and overall shape of much of the fiction of these writers.
