Renewable Energy Sources and Climate Change Mitigation

This Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report (IPCC-SRREN) assesses the potential role of renewable energy in the mitigation of climate change. It covers the six most important renewable energy sources – bioenergy, solar, geothermal, hydropower, ocean and wind energy – as well as their integration into present and future energy systems. It considers the environmental and social consequences associated with the deployment of these technologies and presents strategies to overcome technical as well as non-technical obstacles to their application and diffusion. SRREN brings a broad spectrum of technology-specific experts together with scientists studying energy systems as a whole. Prepared following strict IPCC procedures, it presents an impartial assessment of the current state of knowledge: it is policy relevant but not policy prescriptive. SRREN is an invaluable assessment of the potential role of renewable energy for the mitigation of climate change for policymakers, the private sector and academic researchers.

Agroforestry with Commercial Clonal Plantations in India

Rapid deforestation and depletion of genetic resources have made it essential that avenues be found whereby short-duration trees can be propagated and massed produced. Clonal agroforestry plantations provide this alternative to the use of natural forests. Agroforestry with Commercial Clonal Plantations in India provides complete scientific information on clonal technology applications for selection and cloning of candidate plus trees, development, field testing, final selection and deployment of genetically superior, high yielding and fast-growing clones of important tree species grown under agroforestry system. Clonal agroforestry plantations need to be supported with strong R & D and sound...

Looking Back to Change Track

In 1997, when India celebrated 50 years of its Independence, TERI's study Growth with Resource Enhancement of Environment and Nature (GREEN) India 2047 assessed whether the country was moving on an environmentally sustainable path. The sequel to the study, Directions Innovations and Strategies for Harnessing Action (DISHA) for sustainable development, released in 2001, projected environmental and resource implications for the country by 2047 under two scenarios, that is, continuing in a business-as-usual mode and adopting a more sustainable development trajectory. The present study picks up the thread from 1997, examining environmental trends in the last decade, isolating underlying priority issues and identifying strategies that are needed to prevent or ameliorate environmental damage. The mandate of the present study, thus, is to go beyond reporting the state of India's environment. Through an evaluation of the major factors that are responsible for the present state and the characteristics of resulting impacts, the study provides an agenda for action.

While the effects of climate change become ever more apparent and pressing, the discussion of sustainable practices and environmental protection is a common overture among the academic and scientific communities. However, in order to be truly effective, sustainable solutions must be tested and applied in real-world situations. Sustainability Science for Social, Economic, and Environmental Development investigates the role of sustainability in the everyday lives of ordinary citizens, including issues of economy, social interaction, exploitation of natural resources, and sources of renewable energy. In this book, researchers, policy makers, economists, scientists, and general readers will all find crucial insight into the parallels between theory and practice in sustainable development.

This proceedings volume presents recent theoretical and practical advances in operational research (OR). The papers focus on a number of key areas including combinatorial optimization, integer programming, heuristics, and mathematical programming. In addition, this volume highlights OR applications in different areas such as financial decision making, marketing, e-business, project management, scheduling, traffic and transportation. The chapters are based on papers presented at the 13th Balkan Conference on Operations Research (BALCOR). BALCOR is an established biennial conference. The selected papers promote international collaboration among researchers and practitioners, with a particular focus on the Balkan countries.

Environment and Development

Following a trajectory of high growth, China and India face a common challenge of achievingan environmentally benign pattern of development owing to growing global issues like climatechange, land degradation, and biodiversity loss. In wake of the above, the China Council forInternational Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED) and the India Councilfor Sustainable Development (ICSD) commissioned a joint-study, to be conducted by ChineseAcademy of Environmental Planning (CAEP) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).Thisbook is the outcome of the study and understands the environment and development paradigmsfor both India and China, identifies key issues, and draws commonalities, differences, and lessonsthat can be learnt.

Organic farming is a new revolution in agriculture on a global scale. This has come in wake of realization of ill effects of Green Revolution. This book has given description of adverse effects of chemicals used in agriculture and the urgent need to switch to organic farming by the use of biofertilizers and adopting biocontrol measures. Organic farming is a sustainable option where cheap and ecofriendly biofertilizers are produced by farmers and scientists using various micro organisms such as bacteria, algae and fungi. Green pest management practices using biocontrol agents for minimising the crop loss due to insect pests is extensively described in this book. The authors have also dealt with the different measures adopted in India to popularize the use of biofertilizers and biocontrol agents. The book focuses attention on present day challenge of attaining sustainable agriculture without damaging the environment.
