This volume is the most comprehensive reference work on visual communications to date. An international group of well-known experts in the field provide up-to-date and in-depth contributions on topics such as fundamental theory, international standards for industrial applications, high definition television, optical communications networks, and VLSI design. The book includes information for learning about both the fundamentals of image/video compression as well as more advanced topics in visual communications research. In addition, the Handbook of Visual Communications explores the latest developments in the field, such as model-based image coding, and provides readers with insight into possible future developments. - Displays comprehensive coverage from fundamental theory to international standards and VLSI design - Includes 518 pages of contributions from well-known experts - Presents state-of-the-art knowledge--the most up-to-date and accurate information on various topics in the field - Provides an extensive overview of international standards for industrial applications
Computer Systems and Software Engineering is a compilation of sixteen state-of-the-art lectures and keynote speeches given at the COMPEURO '92 conference. The contributions are from leading researchers, each of whom gives a new insight into subjects ranging from hardware design through parallelism to computer applications. The pragmatic flavour of the contributions makes the book a valuable asset for both researchers and designers alike. The book covers the following subjects: Hardware Design: memory technology, logic design, algorithms and architecture; Parallel Processing: programming, cellular neural networks and load balancing; Software Engineering: machine learning, logic programming and program correctness; Visualization: the graphical computer interface.
The SAMOS workshop is an international gathering of highly quali?ed researchers from academia and industry, sharing in a 3-day lively discussion on the quiet and - spiring northern mountainside of the Mediterranean island of Samos. As a tradition, the workshop features workshop presentations in the morning, while after lunch all kinds of informal discussions and nut-cracking gatherings take place. The workshop is unique in the sense that not only solved research problems are presented and discussed but also (partly) unsolved problems and in-depth topical reviews can be unleashed in the sci- ti?c arena. Consequently, the workshop provides the participants with an environment where collaborati...
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Systems, Architectures, Modeling, and Simulation, SAMOS 2006, held in Samos, Greece on July 2006. The 47 revised full papers presented together with 2 keynote talks were thoroughly reviewed and selected from 130 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on system design and modeling, wireless sensor networks, processor design, dependable computing, architectures and implementations, and embedded sensor systems.
A comprehensive overview of the current evolution of research in algorithms, architectures and compilation for parallel systems is provided by this publication. The contributions focus specifically on domains where embedded systems are required, either oriented to application-specific or to programmable realisations. These are crucial in domains such as audio, telecom, instrumentation, speech, robotics, medical and automotive processing, image and video processing, TV, multimedia, radar and sonar. The book will be of particular interest to the academic community because of the detailed descriptions of research results presented. In addition, many contributions feature the "real-life" applications that are responsible for driving research and the impact of their specific characteristics on the methodologies is assessed. The publication will also be of considerable value to senior design engineers and CAD managers in the industrial arena, who wish either to anticipate the evolution of commercially available design tools or to utilize the presented concepts in their own R&D programmes.
Video technology promises to be the key for the transmission of motion video. A number of video compression techniques and standards have been introduced in the past few years, particularly the MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 for interactive multimedia and for digital NTSC and HDTV applications, and H.2611H.263 for video telecommunications. These techniques use motion estimation techniques to reduce the amount of data that is stored and transmitted for each frame. This book is about these motion estimation algorithms, their complexity, implementations, advantages, and drawbacks. First, we present an overview of video compression techniques with an emphasis to techniques that use motion estimation, such as...
This book contains the papers presented at the 9th International Workshop on Field ProgrammableLogic and Applications (FPL’99), hosted by the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, August 30 – September 1, 1999. FPL’99 is the ninth in the series of annual FPL workshops. The FPL’99 programme committee has been fortunate to have received a large number of high-quality papers addressing a wide range of topics. From these, 33 papers have been selected for presentation at the workshop and a further 32 papers have been accepted for the poster sessions. A total of 65 papers from 20 countries are included in this volume. FPL is a subject area that attracts researchers from both elec...
Multirate Switched-Capacitor Circuits for 2-D Signal Processing introduces the concepts of analog multirate signal processing for the efficient implementation of two-dimensional (2-D) filtering in integrated circuit form, particularly from the viewpoints of silicon area and power dissipation. New 2-D switched-capacitor (SC) networks and design techniques are presented, both with finite impulse response (FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) with separable denominator polynomial, which offer simpler and more systematic synthesis procedures than currently available design techniques for 2-D analog filters. Since they are in the discrete-time domain, the book can be also referred to the digi...
The International Workshop on Power and Timing Modeling, Optimization, and Simulation PATMOS 2002, was the 12th in a series of international workshops 1 previously held in several places in Europe. PATMOS has over the years evolved into a well-established and outstanding series of open European events on power and timing aspects of integrated circuit design. The increased interest, espe- ally in low-power design, has added further momentum to the interest in this workshop. Despite its growth, the workshop can still be considered as a very - cused conference, featuring high-level scienti?c presentations together with open discussions in a free and easy environment. This year, the workshop has...
