  • Publisher: Springer

This book provides a comprehensive description of the pathology of the head and neck region, concentrating especially on those pathologic entities that are unique to or characteristic of the head and neck. The new edition retains the ten chapters of the first edition, all updated and improved, and additionally contains seven entirely new chapters and a more detailed subject index. The number of illustrations has been substantially increased, and various lesions absent in the original edition have been included. Throughout, attention is paid to correlation of pathology with epidemiology, clinical features, pathogenesis, and molecular genetics. Differential diagnosis is addressed, and information is also provided on staging, prognosis, and therapy. The authors include foremost experts in the field, some of whom are senior members of the Working Group on Head and Neck Pathology of the European Society of Pathology.

Cosmic Explosions

The diversity of stellar death is revealed in the energy, velocity and geometry of the explosion debris ("ejecta''). Using multi-wavelength observations of gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows I show that GRBs, arising from the death of massive stars, are marked by relativistic, collimated ejecta ("jets'') with a wide range of opening angles. These results suggest that various cosmic explosions are powered by a common energy source, an "engine'' (possibly an accreting stellar-mass black hole), with their diverse appearances determined solely by the variable high velocity output. On the other hand, using radio observations I show that local type Ibc core-collapse supernovae generally lack relativ...

Oral Pathology

Oral Pathology as part of the Head and Neck Pathology is an interdisciplinary field of science. The oral mucosa and the saliva are reflectors of many systemic diseases of the organism and therefore valuable parameters of the diagnosis and prognosis of pathological processes. In the last years many new methods have been integrated in the diagnostic repertoire. Proliferation markers are of predicitive value and characterize the biological behavior of a tumor. Markers are such as oncogenes, growth factor receptors or genetic aberrations. The importance of these new markers shall be discussed concerning the different types of oral cancers and salivary gland tumours.

Maxillofacial Surgery

Now in full color, Maxillofacial Surgery, 3rd Edition covers the entire specialty of maxillofacial surgery, including craniofacial deformity, oral surgery, trauma, and oncology. Unlike other OMFS texts where the contributors are singly boarded in oral surgery, this richly illustrated text boasts OMFS contributors who are all dual boarded in both oral surgery and medicine. Thoroughly updated with evidence-based content, it addresses the advances in technology and procedures providing oral and maxillofacial surgeons with new and exciting treatment options. And with print and digital formats, it is easy to use in any setting. - Authoritative guidance on oral and maxillofacial surgery by interna...

A working group of sixteen experts from seven countries re-evaluated the evidence of the carcinogenicity of betel-quid and areca-nut chewing and some areca-nut related nitrosamines. Betel-quid and areca-nut chewing are widely practised in many parts of Asia and in Asian-migrant communities elsewhere in the world. There are hundreds of millions of users worldwide. They evaluated betel quid with tobacco as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) on the basis of sufficient evidence of an increased risk of cancer of the oral cavity, pharynx and oesophagus. The working group reviewed epidemiological studies of human cancer, mainly studies from India, Pakistan and Taiwan (China). Studies on betel quid wi...

This concise reference book provides an international standard for pathologists and oncologists and will serve as an indispensable guide for use in the design of studies monitoring response to therapy and clinical outcome. Diagnostic criteria, pathological features, and associated genetic alterations are described in a strictly disease-oriented manner. Sections on all WHO-recognized neoplasms and their variants include new ICD-O codes, incidence, age and sex distribution, location, clinical signs and symptoms, pathology, genetics, and predictive factors. This volume covers tumours of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, of the nasopharynx, of the hypophyranyx, larynx and trachea, of the oral cavity and oropharynx, of salivary glands, as well as odontogenetic tumours, tumours of the ear, the paraganglionic system, and inherited tumour syndromes. Each entity is extensively discussed with information on clinicopathological, epidemiological, immunophenotypic and genetic aspects of these diseases.

Xenotransplantation

The cover of this book depicts a Lamassu, one of the "fabulous" beasts of mythology [1]. Like many similar creatures, such as the Chimera, Griffon, Hippocamp, and Cockatrice, the body of the Lamassu was clearly a combination of structures derived from sev eral different species - in other words, it provides a highly success ful example of xenotransplantation. But in selecting a symbol of xenotransplantation to grace the cover of this volume, why choose the Lamassu in preference to the other ancient beasts? The reason is that the Lamassu appears to have been endowed with a much Fig. I. Homer described the Chimera as consisting of a lion's foreparts, a goat in the middle, and a serpent's hind ...

Featuring 900 full-color illustrations, this book is a concise and practical atlas of the surgical pathology and cytology of the head and neck. It covers the most common head and neck lesions and tumors the general pathologist sees in daily practice and will aid pathology residents and practitioners in quickly narrowing down a histologic differential diagnosis. Integral to the images provided are illustrated criteria for achieving a diagnosis—essentially what to look for when reviewing pathology slides. Differential diagnoses are shown, as are pitfalls in the diagnosis. A companion Website will offer the fully searchable text and an image bank.
