L'ouvrage présente une étude supervisée par Maurizio Andolfi, au sein de l'Accademia di Psicoterapia della Famiglia à Rome. L'objectif était d'évaluer les traces et les effets de la thérapie sur les familles et, plus généralement, d'analyser le sens du processus thérapeutique. Le modèle théorique de référence qui a guidé l'analyse des cas cliniques était le point de vie tri-générationnel (les familles en suivi ont été rencontrées quelques années après la fin de leur suivi). L'évaluation a été menée à travers des entretiens téléphoniques (avec la famille, les thérapeutes, le superviseur et parfois le référent) et à travers des séances de follow up où la famille a été invitée à participer. Les cas cliniques se regroupaient autour de trois problématiques principales : les difficultés de couple, les pathologies psychotiques et l'anorexie.
