Wake Up and Roar

H.W.L. Poonja - affectionately known as Papaji - was only nine years old when he experienced his first samadhi, an altered state of consciousness where observer and object merge. As an adult, he sat in devotion with Sri Ramana Maharshi, and went on to become a master teacher in his own right, whose followers trekked across the world to sit in his presence. Wake Up and Roar is a collector's edition of teachings delivered throughout his life, edited by Eli Jaxon-Bear, a longtime student of Papaji. Originally published in two volumes, here is Papaji's landmark work bound in one elegant book with previously unreleased photographs and a new foreword from Gangaji, his best-known student. After he realized the true Self in the presence of his Master, Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi, he attracted seekers from India and the world over. In the early nineties, when he could no longer travel, a flood of westerners came to be with him in Lucknow, India. Papaji, as they affectionately called him, told them to call off their search. He said that they were what they were searching for. All they had to do was keep quiet. "You are Happiness. You are Peace. You are Freedom itself." They heard him. A remarkable number of them awakened, or at least had a glimpse of their true identity. Their stories are captivating and through their portrayals of Papaji his living transmission is offered to us.

In 1901, a young man was sitting on the holy mountain Arunachala in South India, when a scholar came to him with burning questions about the nature of Truth. As he was not speaking at that time, the answers were given in silence, written in the sand. The young man was to become the renowned Saint Sri Ramana Maharshi. Twenty years after the initial interview, in the early days of the Ramana Ashram, he himself edited his answers given that day, which became the first ashram publication setting out his essential teachings. Sri Ramana Maharshi The Indian Saint was born in 1879. After coming to the holy mountain Arunachala aged seventeen, his early years there were alone and silent. In the 1920s he moved to a permanent place at the foot of Arunachala and the present ashram was constructed. Here he lived and taught until his death in 1950. Many people from all over the world visited Sri Ramana at the ashram, coming to directly experience his spiritual power and the profound peace and simplicity of the ashram.
