The World Health Report 2006

  • Categories: Law

The 2006 World Health Report focuses on the chronic shortages of doctors, midwives, nurses and other health care support workers in the poorest countries of the world where they are most needed. This is particularly true in sub-Saharan Africa, which has only four in every hundred global health workers but has a quarter of the global burden of disease, and less than one per cent of the world's financial resources. Poor working conditions, high rates of attrition due to illness and migration, and education systems that are unable to pick up the slack reflect the depth of the challenges in these crisis countries. This report considers the challenges involved and sets out a 10-year action plan designed to tackle the crisis over the next ten years, by which countries can strengthen their health system by building their health workforces and institutional capacity with the support of global partners.

"I walk around the streets and alleys with ease, surprised at my newborn sense of direction. A strange sensation of familiarity wells up in me, as if I had been there before or it had always been waiting for me. I open the heavy main gate, climb up and down the staircase that leads to my small flat, a silent presence observes me, scrutinizes my moves, guesses my shape from under my scanty clothes. His door is opposite the entrance at the bottom of the patio. It is always open, but protected from prying eyes by a green net curtain. I am sitting by the pool with my new and challenging book of Spanish verbs, he walks up the stairs with a piece of chicken in his hand: "My name is Mike, but they call me Jingle", he kisses me on one cheek as a sign of informal presentation and he goes off again to continue what he was doing".

As the work progresses so are brought forth memories, those linked to the house of a hundred years and hers, an American, who made her home in Rome with her new Italian husband during the fifties. It brings to life a region, Romagna, where the house is located, a region half mountains and half fertile plains, a contribution toward its deeply varied past. It is a region with its ways, its own identity, its habits and contradictions. And its secrets. Woven into the story is the history of a miracle that took place during the Second World War-"Traces I was bent on following at first from curiosity but became a quest for a lost faith."
