Recent Acquisitions A Selection 2014-2016
Every two years the fall issue of the Met's quarterly Bulletin celebrates notable recent acquisitions and gifts to the collection. Highlights of Recent Acquisitions 2014–2016 include Charles Le Brun's Everhard Jabach (1618–1695) and His Family, a donation of nearly 1,300 works of art from East and South Asia, three hundred masterpieces of Japanese Art from the Mary and Jackson Burke Foundation, more than two hundred works by American photographer Irving Penn, and Untitled (Studio) by Kerry James Marshall among many others. Laurie
Laurie is a millennial dog-parent who is depressed, and attempts to find meaning from the people closest to her. She recently broke up with her co-worker Sean, and looks for reasons to either defend or dismiss him. She also compares and contrasts herself to her best friend, Meghan, who seems to have her life together on paper by getting married and having a child. Her parents, both simultaneously lifelong mentors and fellow, flawed human beings, struggle to be patient with Laurie as she tries to make sense of her life, which she soon realizes, may never, ever make sense (and that she has to be okay with that).

In a world increasingly shaped by displacement and migration, refuge is both a coveted right and an elusive promise for millions. While conventionally understood as legal protection, it also transcends judicial definitions. In Lived Refuge, Vinh Nguyen reconceptualizes refuge as an ongoing affective experience and lived relation rather than a fixed category with legitimacy derived from the state. Focusing on Southeast Asian diasporas in the wake of the Vietnam War, Nguyen examines three affective experiences—gratitude, resentment, and resilience—to reveal the actively lived dimensions of refuge. Through multifaceted analyses of literary and cultural productions, Nguyen argues that the meaning of refuge emerges from how displaced people negotiate the kinds of safety and protection that are offered to (and withheld from) them. In so doing, he lays the framework for an original and compelling understanding of contemporary refugee subjectivity.
