« Je » est un trentenaire désabusé, cynique. Un inutile qui déteste son emploi et la vie qu’il mène. Quand sa petite amie le quitte - un soir où elle lui annonce qu’elle est enceinte et qu’il lui demande « de qui ? » - il pète les plombs. Il échafaude alors les contours d’un mystérieux plan qui l’entrainera dans une succession de situations improbables et souvent burlesques… Un titre inutile est un roman contemporain profondément ancré dans son époque. Et derrière l’odyssée absurde du narrateur - durant laquelle il commettra l’inexplicable - il y a la critique amère et cinglante d’une société occidentale matérialiste en plein déclin.
