Patriotism
Economic and cultural globalization and the worldwide threat of terrorism have contributed to the resurgence of patriotic loyalty in many parts of the world and made the issues it raises highly topical. The Victorian private solider was a despised figure. A working man had to be desperate indeed to take the Queen’s shilling. Yet in the first sixteen months of the Great War two and a half million men from the UK and many more from the empire, flocked to the colours – without any form of legal compulsion. There had never been a volunteer army like it. What was in the air of England in the generation or so before 1914 to bring about such collective exultation? How did it come about that, in a society which – in oft-proclaimed contrast to Germany – rejected conscription and prided itself on having no taint of militarism, men could be induced to volunteer in such numbers? The nation’s general state of mind, system of values and set of attitudes derived largely from the upper middle class, which had emerged and become dominant during the nineteenth century. The book examines the phenomenon of 1914 and the views held by people of that class, since it was under their leadership that the country went to war.

Letters, on the Spirit of Patriotism
Attributed to Viscount Bolingbroke in NUC pre-1956. To recommend himself to Frederick, prince of Wales, Bolingbroke entrusted to Alexander Pope his unpublished manuscript of three works: 'The patriot king' dated December 1738; an essay previously written upon the 'Spirit of patriotism' and afterwards addressed to Lord Lyttelton; and a paper on 'The state of parties at the accesssion of George I.' Pope's secret publication of 1500 copies of 'The patriot king' led Bolingbroke to anonymously publish a "correct edition" in 1749 edited by David Mallet. Cf. DNB and advertisement (p. v-xi)
Patriotism, Power and Print
Gillian Brennan examines national consciousness, language and literature in 16th century England. She explores patriotism and discusses its nature, the different modes of cultural expression it finds, and analyses its use in political and religious propaganda. The author draws a distinction between nationalism and patriotism, investigates the etymology of both words and sets out to examine the connotations of patriotism in its own right - not as being nascent nationalism. Surprising disparities appear between loyalty to the nation and loyalty to the crown and the author reveals the monarch's ambivalent attitude to patriotism and challenges the perceived unified national spirit in Elizabeth's reign by examining a range of literature of the period. Patriotism in drama and in poetry is examined and in this way Brennan gives the reader a new and exciting perspective on many aspects of life and perception in the sixteenth century.
For Love of Country
Nationalism and patriotism are two of the most powerful forces shaping world history. Though seen by many as two sides of the same coin, they have developed widely different connotations. Nationalism is increasingly seen as destructive, and at the root of the world's bloodiest conflicts; patriotism seems something more benign, a political virtue. How are we to mark the distinction between these two phenomena? How can we rescue patriotism from the tainted grasp of nationalism? Reconstructing the historical the meaning of the terms, Maurizio Viroli shows how the two concepts have been used within specific cultural and ideological contexts. He reviews the political though of Italy, England, and Germany and shows how patriotism and nationalism have fundamentally different roots. Professor Viroli concludes that it is morally unacceptable, and indeed unnecessary, to be a nationalist to defend the values that nationalists hold dear. Alongside the familiar names like William Caxton, Nelson and Elizabeth I, come those which are perhaps less familiar but no less important - Edward Longshanks, the Hammer of the Scots, and Warwick the Kingmaker; Pelagius and Dr Harvey. The result is a fascinating slice of history which brings key British figures to life in a simple and most accessible way. Anyone who enjoyed The Pocket Book of Patriotism will savour this book.
