On Canvas

  • Categories: Art

The first truly comprehensive analysis of the history, practice, and conservation of painting on canvas. Throughout its long history in Western art, canvas has played an influential role in the creative process. From the Renaissance development of oil painting on canvas to the present day—through Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, and other art historical movements—the use of canvas has enhanced the scale of painting, freedom of brushwork, and spontaneity in technique. This book recounts some of that rich history in relation to corresponding developments in conservation practice. Rather than concentrating on the familiar concerns of cleaning and varnish removal, this volume considers...

Original Sin in the Twenty-First Century

Original Sin in the 21st Century begins with a cold, hard fact: Christians, we have a problem! No one is listening to us when we talk about original sin. That will change as you follow an exploration of original sin as an enduring truth about human nature. This book is not another exposition of either the history or the doctrine of original sin. Rather, it opens up new avenues of consideration, such as original goodness as a counterweight to original sin, a contemporary interpretation of the Adam–Eve narrative, the new relevancy of Reinhold Niebuhr’s recognition that we are not as good as our ideals, and a soul-searching inquiry into whether original sin is too dark or perhaps not dark enough. The twenty-first century is far more than a backdrop. This book invites us to rethink what sin looks like when the world warms, when AI is created in our own image, and when sin thrives on indifference and willful ignorance. The author will quickly convince you this century is both an opportunity and an imperative to rethink original sin for what lies ahead.

Conserving Canvas

  • Categories: Art

The most authoritative publication in nearly fifty years on the subject of conserving paintings on canvas. In 2019, Yale University, with the support of the Getty Foundation, held an international conference, where nearly four hundred attendees from more than twenty countries gathered to discuss a vital topic: how best to conserve paintings on canvas. It was the first major symposium on the subject since 1974, when wax-resin and glue-paste lining reigned as the predominant conservation techniques. Over the past fifty years, such methods, which were often destructive to artworks, have become less widely used in favor of more minimalist approaches to intervention. More recent decades have witn...

The Conservation of Medieval Polychrome Wood Sculpture

  • Categories: Art

The first English-language book to comprehensively discuss the history and methodology of conserving medieval polychrome wood sculpture. Medieval polychrome wood sculptures are highly complex objects, bearers of histories that begin with their original carving and adornment and continue through long centuries of repainting, deterioration, restoration, and conservation. Abundantly illustrated, this book is the first in English to offer a comprehensive overview of the conservation of medieval painted wood sculpture for conservators, curators, and others charged with their care. Beginning with an illuminating discussion of the history, techniques, and meanings of these works, it continues with ...

This book examines the 'Know How Fund', Britain’s bilateral technical assistance programme in post-communist central and eastern Europe, devised in response to the end of the Cold War. The Know How Fund (KHF) was the technical assistance programme which Margaret Thatcher’s government launched in the spring of 1989 to encourage Poland’s transition from communism to democracy and free-market capitalism. It was subsequently extended to other countries of central and eastern Europe and might be considered a novel experiment in what the US secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, would later term ‘transformational diplomacy’. Drawing upon still-closed records of the Cabinet Office, the Dep...

This book is the first to address the curatorial career of Diego Velázquez, painter to King Philip IV of Spain and chamberlain of his royal palace. It investigates the role that Velázquez played in overseeing the display of the Habsburg art collection, then the richest in the western world, and the role, in turn, that this practice played in his creative trajectory between his arrival at the Spanish court in 1623 and his death in 1660. This book thus recasts Velázquez’s career as an episode in the history of the curator.

Clare Through the Twentieth Century

Numerous histories have been written of the older colleges of Oxford and Cambridge. During the 20th century, Clare, founded in 1326, has two - Manfield Forbes' eccentric six century survey up to 1926, and Richard Eden's recent Clare College and the Founding of Clare Hall. However no previous attempt has been made by the College, or as far as is known by any Oxbridge college, to present a wide-ranging overview of college life and learning through the 20th century.

Building Resilience in Sub-Saharan Africa's Fragile States

This paper analyzes the persistence of fragility in some sub-Saharan African states and the multiple dimensions of state weakness that are simultaneously at play. This study also provides an overview of the analytics of fragility, conflict, and international engagement with fragile states before turning to an assessment of the current state of affairs and the areas in which there has been progress in building resilience. The paper also looks at the role of fiscal policies and institutions and analyzes growth accelerations and decelerations. Seven country case studies help identify more concretely some key factors at play, and the diversity of paths followed, with an emphasis on the sequencing of reforms. The paper concludes with a summary of the main findings and policy implications.
