Joshua Bates is a retired banker. He now teaches business classes at a small college in Colorado. The tragic death of one of his students leads to the exploration of an old mine. The mine is perceived to be cursed by those in the area. Near-death experiences of Professor Bates and his associates while they try to explore the mine seem to justify everybody's suspicions. Events finally lead to the uncovering of a murder plot that points to illegal activities on the other side of the world. Those activities place Professor Bates and his entourage in great danger without their knowledge. This is the first installment of The Clock Struck series featuring Professor Bates and his associates in Wasatch, Colorado.

Nobody's Story

Exploring the careers of five influential women writers of the Restoration and eighteenth century, Catherine Gallagher reveals the connections between the increasing prestige of female authorship, the economy of credit and debt, and the rise of the novel. The "nobodies" of her title are not ignored, silenced, or anonymous women. Instead, they are literal nobodies: the abstractions of authorial personae, printed books, intellectual property rights, literary reputations, debts and obligations, and fictional characters. These are the exchangeable tokens of modern authorship that lent new cultural power to the increasing number of women writers through the eighteenth century. Women writers, Gall...

Republic Pictures Corporation, began as a motion picture laboratory in 1915. By 1935, Republic had become a studio and released its first movie, Westward Ho! starring a young John Wayne, who would stay with Republic for the next 17 years. Republic would go on to produce highly successful Westerns starring singing cowboys Gene Autry and Roy Rogers as well as serial adventure series. The studio cranked out so many exciting (not to mention money-making) serials that it became known as "The Thrill Factory." Occasionally, Republic would produce and distribute "A" features, such as Macbeth and The Quiet Man, but it was the "B" Westerns and adventure serials that they knew best how to produce and market. Until its demise in 1959, Republic fed hungry moviegoers with a steady diet of "B" Westerns, serials, dramas, series pictures and musicals. The Republic Pictures Checklist provides a full listing of Republic releases, with plot synopses, release dates, alternate titles, chapter titles and awards. All of Republic's output, including documentaries and training films, is included.

Because of its location, Berkeley County, Virginia was a natural magnet for migration and a focal point of westward expansion. The bulk of Berkeley County's early records--including its marriage records--can be found today in the courthouse in Martinsburg, West Virginia. The present work is a digest of the Berkeley marriage records for the entire period from 1781 through 1854. It is arranged in alphabetical order by the names of both brides and grooms and contains the records of nearly 6,000 marriages. At least 15,000 persons are mentioned in this work, not counting ministers.
