Several of the chapters that appear in this book were first presented at a conference on "The Color of Hunger" on April 25, 1992. The book discusses the connections between race and hunger, both domestically and internationally; presents a personal narrative about hunger and poverty among people of color in the United States; probes the use of racial and geographic stereotypes that U.S. hunger relief organizations use in their fund-raising appeals to the general public; provides a psychological analysis of the link between racial prejudice and hunger; discusses the theory that development assistance programs of the United States are saturated with assumptions of white supremacy; analyzes development agencies and the international media; presents a historical summary of the linkage between hunger and race in the contemporary world; and offers case studies of hunger and race in different national contexts. The last chapter urges all to enter the fight against global apartheid.

West Indian immigrants to the United States fare better than native-born African Americans on a wide array of economic measures, including labor force participation, earnings, and occupational prestige. The three small economies that are the subject of this study were established as artificial colonial societies and have remained extremely vulnerable to the international capitalists system, a situation that has led to homegrown efforts to assert methods of development not associated with capitalism. After placing the developmental realities of the three countries in the general context of the Caribbean region and the global capitalist system, Rose (Siena College) critically examines the attempts of the three countries' experiments with socialism, begun in the 1970s. She reserves greater criticism for the United States as she turns her attention to U.S. government efforts to destabilize the countries in an effort to prevent the emerging of any socialist alternatives in an area it viewed as part of its sphere of influence. Written in two parts, part 1 explores the development of Calypso, from it's emergence in the pre-colonial period to the post colonial period. In part 2, the focus is on the new Carnival musical practices of soca, rapso, chutney, soca and ragga soca, and the ways in which they contirbuted to the redefination of Trinidadian cultural politics in the neoliberal era. The new rationailities, contigencies, desires and musical experments that animated the new musics and enabled them to gradually displace calypso from its centrality as national expression is examined.
