The Biology of the Deep Ocean

Erratum: Table 11.1 on page 241 has been mis-set. The entries for the phyla Annelida, Bryozoa, Cnidaria, Echiura, Mollusca, Placozoa, Porifera and Rotifera should all be moved one column to the right. The deep sea environment is the most extensive on our planet. Its denizens are normally unseen but whenever they are exposed to view they are regarded as bizarre aliens from a different world. The Biology of the Deep Ocean takes a close look at this apparently hostile world and explains how its inhabitants are exquisitely adapted to survive and flourish within it.

Publications relevant to marine bioluminescence from 1979 through 1987 are annotated and cross-indexed by author, organism studied, geographic location, and key words. Sources of research funding are discussed, and the most prolific institutions and most popular sources for publication are identified. Six areas of particular interest--namely flash characteristics, stimulation techniques, geographic and temporal distribution and occurrence and correlation with environmental parameters, the luminous organism themselves, symbiosis, and circadian rhythms are identified and analyzed for significant progress, important research omissions, and trends. No significant trends are identified, although the suggestion of the possibility of a decrease in research effort in these areas over the decade is noted. The international nature of the research is considered ... Bioluminescence, Marine biology, Optical properties.

This volume reviews the most important advances that have taken place in the interpretation of the structure and function of molluscan systems. A detailed treatment of each organ system is presented with particular emphasis on skin, shell, muscle, and excretory systems, and luminescences. Emphasis is given to recent research and the current status of each topic.

Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence: Basic Chemistry and Analytical Applications is a compendium of papers presented at the second International Symposium on Analytical Applications of Bioluminescene and Chemiluminescence in San Diego, California on August 26-28, 1980. Part I deals with chemilunescence and excited states including topics on the spectroscopy of the solvent cage — generation and characteristics of the excited state and the three features of chemi- and bioluminescence. Part II deals with events prior to producing luminol-dependent chemiluminescence; this part also examines the effects of stimulants on membrane potential. Part III discusses bacterial bioluminescence and anal...

Since 1948, when the first volume of this extraordinary classic appeared, we've impatiently awaited an English translation of Traite de Zoology. The project is now begun--by the great Dutch publishing house, Brill. The first volumes (number 7 of the Traite) dating from 1993, comprise four numbers, revised and updated by the original and/or new authors & editors to appear in eight physical volumes of ca. 400 pages each. The first volume deals with definition, primitive forms and classification; segmentation, tagmata and appendages; integument--morphology and biochemistry; chromatophores and pigmentation; moulting, autonomy and regeneration; eyes and vision; other sense organs; and luminous organs and luminescence. Production is exquisite--the usual Brill quality. We've yet to learn if the entire Traite which appears in Guide to Reference Books is to be translated; say your best prayers (& buy Crustacea)--to motivate Brill.
