Ecosystem Edge

To succeed in the face of disruptive competition, companies will need to harness the power of a wide range of partners who can bring different skills, experience, capacity, and their own networks to the task. With the advent of new technologies, rapidly changing customer needs, and emerging competitors, companies across more and more industries are seeing their time-honored ways of making money under threat. In this book, Arnoud De Meyer and Peter J. Williamson explain how business can meet these challenges by building a large and dynamic ecosystem of partners that reinforce, strengthen, and encourage innovation in the face of ongoing disruption. While traditional companies know how to assem...

From Global to Metanational

For all interested in what it means to "go global," Doz (global technology and innovation) and his colleagues at INSEAD distinguish metanational from multinational companies and discuss how such companies (e.g., Nokia) innovate by effectively tapping globally dispersed knowledge about technology and consumer trends. They specify capabilities that this new breed of business needs to build and knowledge prospecting strategies. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Varieties of Corporatism

Varieties of Corporatism

Originally published in 1985, this book provides a comprehensive discussion of the concept of corporatism. It seeks to develop models of the different types of corporatism against the background of a general model. It represents a systematic attempt to clarify, rather than simply discuss, the concept of corporatism in its various usages. It examines the three varieties of corporatism: a body of nineteenth- and twentieth-century prescriptive economic and social thought; the practice of certain authoritarian regimes with private ownership of the means of production and wage labour; and a theoretical tool of analysis employed to study relations between organised groups and the state in ostensibly liberal democracies. It draws on a wide range of historical and contemporary writing on the subject, and includes a detailed study of the ideas behind and nature of corporatism in Fascist Italy and in Portugal under Salazar and Caetano. The discussion of the varieties of corporatism is clearly related to debates in the social sciences on its nature.

Indian Peter is the remarkable story of Peter Williamson, who, in 1743 at the age of 13, was snatched from an Aberdeen quayside and transported to the burgeoning American colonies to be sold into indentured servitude. Unlike many others who found themselves in similar circumstances, Peter was fortunate to be bought by a humane man who left him money when he died, enabling him to buy his own farm after marrying. According to Peter's own account, his farm was attacked in 1754, during what became known as the French and Indian War, and he was captured by the Indians, who forced him to travel with them as a slave. After escaping, he joined the British Army to fight the French and their Indian al...

Corporatism in Perspective

This book offers a systematic and basic introduction to corporatism in the context of liberal democracies. Corporatism has been heralded as one of the most important concepts to have emerged recently in the social sciences. It has led to both theoretical or definitional work on the corporatist model, and to the application of the model to empirical studies. The literature on corporatism is extensive, diverse and complex, reflecting the wide-ranging importance of the model. In this introductory text, Peter Williamson draws together the central issues in corporatism and provides a critical guide to the theories and findings of work within the corporatist approach. Individual topics are linked ...
