Northern Cambria
Northern Cambria is not only the upper region of Cambria County, it is also the new name of two century-old villages, Barnesboro and Spangler, that have merged to become a millennium entity. Located high in the Allegheny Mountains of western Pennsylvania, the region was once covered by virgin forests. In time, the dense acreage led to the development of numerous sawmills, from which logs were floated all the way downriver to what was then the lumbering capital of the world, Williamsport. Miles of scenic farmland were cleared and cultivated. Then, in the mid-1800s, rich coal veins were found beneath the Cambrian hills. As word of this discovery spread, mines opened throughout the region. Within a short time, immigrants from far and near streamed into the region to work in the mines. Soon, rail lines were constructed to serve the coal fields. High school graduates became miners and dubbed the mines "Dust College." Coal had become king.

The Freshwater Budget of the Arctic Ocean
Following a decision by the Arctic Ocean Sciences Board (AOSB) in July 1996 the then chainnan, Geoffrey Holland, wrote a letter of invitation to a meeting to plan a "Symposium on the Freshwater Balance of the Arctic". The meeting was held in Ottawa on November 12-13 1996 and was attended by representatives of various organisations, including the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), as well as individual scientists. Results of this meeting included: • Co-sponsorship with AOSB by the Scientific Committee on Ocean Research (SCOR), the Arctic Climate System Study (ACSYS) and the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX). • A decision to apply for funding as a Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Scientific Affairs Division. • That expenses would be covered in part by funds available through an existing NSF grant to the SCOR Executive offices in Baltimore, MD. • The appointment of myself to be Chairman/Manager for the Symposium. • Provision of a recommended list of Scientific Advisors to assist the Chainnan in selecting key speakers.
The Gates of Saint Charles
Professor John Reskos memoir narrates a religious struggle against the backdrop of the Great Depression, World War II, and Pre-Vatican II Catholicism. His dissection of the components of a religious vocation led him in a direction befitting his temperament and natural inclinations rather than the ease of their achievement. He describes his struggle to define a religious vocation and ultimately find the strength to follow his best instincts. It was not easy for a poor boy of uneducated immigrant parents from Austria-Hungry to find his way in the world. But the solid educational foundation provided by the Church proved to be the gateway to a greater purpose. He earned graduate degrees from both Marquette University and the University of Illinois. His doctoral work at Illinois was in the field of reproductive biology. These events portended a successful scientific career in Oregon. The events recorded in The Gates of Saint Charles are coupled with the history of the times and the dogma and traditions of the Roman Church. A small window has been opened into the life and education of seminarians during the time covered by the memoir.

One of the most important problems faced by the United States is addressing its broken criminal justice system. This collection of essays offers a thorough examination of incarceration as a form of punishment.
