The New York Times–bestselling history of the rise of California’s wine country and its most famous vintners—from the author of Napa at Last Light. James Conaway’s remarkable bestseller delves into the heart of California’s lush and verdant Napa Valley, also known as America’s Eden. Long the source of succulent grapes and singular wines, this region is also the setting for the remarkable true saga of the personalities behind the winemaking empires. This is the story of Gallos and Mondavis, of fortunes made and lost, of dynasties and destinies. In this delightful, full-bodied social history, Conaway charts the rise of a new aristocracy and, in so doing, chronicles the collective ripening of the American dream. Napa is a must-read for anyone interested in our country’s obsession with money, land, power, and prestige. “An extraordinary American success story: a pageant of family dramas and blood feuds.” —People “This is more than a ‘wine book’—it is a fascinating and closely reported social history.” —Tracy Kidder

One Just Man

After many years of demanding studies of medicine, a Gift of Healing chooses to manifest itself through Dr. Peter Thornton's unwilling hands. The new ability plays havoc with his professional life. The Gift becomes an insidious curse as it threatens to obliterate his promising career. He struggles against his destiny, until a will greater than his own takes over. Action takes place in Montreal, Poland and the Vatican. The novel is as much a page-turner as it is a study of human potential. "I bought Mr. Law's book One Just Man and have just finished reading every single word. This book is a jewel.... I own my own company called Exploring the Spirit... (and) would like to carry & sell a good number of Mr. Law's books." (Kathleen Y. Rattigan, Quebec, Canada) "I highly recommend having Stan Law read aloud. It boosts sales by creating a rapport with potential customers. (Mickey Smeele, Queen Bee Books, Port Alberni B.C.) The Problem of the Text of Acts

In the book of Acts, the so-called Western text departs from the alternative text in numerous points of detail. These divergences in the textual tradition of Acts have been the subject of renewed interest in recent years, with a notable concentration on Lucan traits in the Western text. The author of this study takes into account recent theories which have been proposed on the textual tradition of Acts, and puts forward an ingenious thesis (not considered hitherto) to explain the existence of two streams of textual tradition for the book. Analysis of a number of Western textual variants in Acts suggests that they may have arisen from the incorporation of marginal annotations into the text of Acts, but Lucan thought and language is indeed characteristic of these readings. Investigation of the non-Western textual tradition uncovers occasional signs of editing according to the interests of the second-century church. From this evidence Dr Strange proposes that Acts shared the fate of numerous other works of antiquity by being published posthumously; the work of two second-century editors is responsible for the remarkable divergence in the textual tradition of Acts.
