In a quiet churchyard in Amersham is the grave of an airman who lost his life fighting in the skies over southern England in October 1940. The author happened to come across this grave in 1998 and after some initial enquiries discovered that nobody in the town was aware that 'One of the Few' Battle of Britain pilots lay at rest in their parish. He determined to discover more about the short life of this hero and undertook several years of research to piece together this biography. Alexandre Vachon
Alexandre is the last child of a family of thirteen, his parents being of modest means and different ethnic origins. Encouraged by his family and the parish Priests, he completes his studies for Priesthood with distinction. Circumstances also lead him to become a science teacher and to pursue studies at Harvard and MIT. Early on, he realizes the need to improve the lot of French-Canadians, not only in the Province of Quebec, but throughout Canada. As Director of the Advanced School of Chemistry and then Dean of the Faculty of Science, and finally as Rector at Laval University, he encourages French-Canadian youth to choose scientific studies and, while maintaining good relations with English Canadians, to take their due place in the Canadian society. The Church recognizes his talents and, in 1939, turns to him to lead the Ottawa diocese: quite a challenge for the new Bishop due to the rivalry that still prevails between the French- and English-speaking people of the diocese. Rome notices the success of his work, particularly of the 1947 Marian Congress, and he is entrusted with new responsibilities which extends to the Church at large.
Hopes and Dreams to Infinity
In a very different direction, wanting to measure a cherished love between two people, I chose a setting, in ‘Death Is Blind’, where Death is an equal protagonist. For the action of those people who are at their best in observing others as much inferior to them in quality of thoughtfulness, I chose the interfacing of a self satisfied, ‘good’ person up against an airy, somewhat confused seeker of a spiritual connection to reality, when it is just the opposite that lies at the base of each of their souls in ‘The Long Fall From Grace’. In the play, ‘The Last Great Fantasy’, I would imagine that our highest wishes for ourselves could still come about when we no longer have chance to make an impact upon humanity and yet still wishing to remain determined to make our mark before we are to disappear forever.
