Strangeness nuclear physics bears a broad impact on contemporary physics. This set of extensive lectures presents a balanced theoretical and experimental introduction to, and survey of, the field. It addresses topics such as the production and spectroscopy of strange nuclear systems, modern approaches to the hyperon-nucleon interaction, and weak decays of hypernuclei. This burgeoning research field is well served by this tutorial primer.
This volume is based on the proceedings of the International Symposium on "Strangeness in Nuclear and Hadronic Systems (SENDAI08)," which is the third in a series of symposia on nuclear physics involving strangeness following SENDAI98 and SENDAI03. With the expectation of the completion of new accelerator facilities such as J-PARC and other new experimental facilities, recent theoretical and experimental results and future prospects of strangeness nuclear physics are discussed in great depth by leading experts of the field. The topics involved are electromagnetic production of strangeness, structure and decay of hypernuclei, hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions, among others. It will also serve as a good textbook for studying the current status of strangeness in nuclear and hadronic physics.

New theories are explored and discussed on establishing relations between the fundamental theory of strong interactions, known as QCD, and experiment. Powerful theoretical models, known as effective theories, based on symmetries of QCD, have been developed to address the non-perturbative regime of QCD in an approximate, yet quantitatively controllable way. The present workshop focussed on the most recent developments in this area. New results on meson and baryon physics are discussed as well and new directions towards the possible experimental confirmation of nuclear/quark matter and quark-gluon plasma are indicated.

The International Conference Mesons and Light Nuclei, organized by the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP), Rez, was held during July 2 - 7, 1995 in small north Bohemian town Straz pod Ralskem. It was the sixth in a series of meetings which took place previously at Liblice 74 and 81, Bechyne 85 and 88, and Prague 91. The conferences gained already their firm position among intermediate energy nuclear physics activities. International nuclear physics community strongly supported our intention to continue the series.
