The Image of Political Power in the Reign of Nerva, AD 96-98

The Image of Political Power in the Reign of Nerva, AD 96-98

At age 65, Nerva assumed the role of emperor of Rome; just sixteen months later, his reign ended with his death. Nerva's short reign robbed his regime of the opportunity for the emperor's imperial image to be defined in building or monumental art, leaving seemingly little for the art historian or archaeologist to consider. In view of this paucity, studies of Nerva primarily focus on the historical circumstances governing his reign with respect to the few relevant literary sources. The Image of Political Power in the Reign of Nerva, AD 96-98, by contrast, takes the entire imperial coinage program issued by the mint of Rome to examine the "self-representation," and, by extension, the policies ...

AD 410

As part of its centenary celebrations in 2010, the Roman Society organised a number of conferences across the UK exploring the theme of AD410 and the "End of Roman Britain". This volume contains a selection of 16 papers delivered at these conferences, tackling the debate from different angles (historical, archaeological, literary) and setting out the current state of research. An introduction by Simon Esmonde Cleary serves to set the volume in the context of the study of Roman Britain over the last forty years, since the inception of the Society's journal, Britannia, and a conclusion by Martin Millett highlights some of the key issues raised in the volume, and points to possible ways forward for future studies.

This book argues that Walton's practice, in his Lives, was crucial in shaping modern expectations of biography: how it should be organised, how it should treat evidence, how seriously it should regard narrative coherence, and most particularly in the modern expectation of an intimaterelationship between author, reader, and subject. Dr Martin considers Walton's biographical ethics in relation to the tributary genres influencing him as they emerged from post-Reformation commendatory practice after 1546, most particularly classical funeral oratory and the emergent Protestantfuneral sermon, the Plutarchan parallel, the didactic Character, martyrological narrative, and finally Walton's direct mod...

Bridge Over Troubled Water

When Roman objects are discovered in rivers they are commonly interpreted as accidental losses or as rubbish deposits revealed by fluvial erosion; this is in contrast to prehistoric assemblages, which are often seen as ritual offerings. Our project challenges these assumptions by publishing for the first time an entire riverine artifact assemblage and comparing its composition to nearby excavated assemblages. The ca. 3,600 finds retrieved by two divers from the River Tees at Piercebridge are also related to the Roman bridges, settlement, and fort, and analyzed to better understand the people who used and deposited them.
