Following France's military defeat in 1940, Marshal Pétain and his Vichy regime drastically expanded upon the role of a top secret organization known as the Postal Surveillance System. The organization served two purposes: to find out how people felt about Vichy's policies, including collaboration with Nazi Germany, and to keep an eye on activities the new government deemed suspicious. Over seventy years later the private letters, telegrams, and phone conversations collected through the Postal Surveillance System provide a wealth of information about the dark years of 1940-1944. Every Word You Write . . . Vichy Will Be Watching You draws from these communications to vividly convey what life was like for the French as they coped with intolerable living conditions. It also details the scurrilous treatment handed out to foreign and French-born Jews by Pétain's government. By allowing the stolen words of ordinary French citizens to speak for themselves, Robert W. Parson offers us a view of history that we seldom find in textbooks.

The Witt Library of the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, is one of the world's greatest art history libraries. It contains some 1.7 million illustrations of the work of painters, draughtsmen, and engravers of the Western tradition, all of whom have been indexed by name, dates, and nationality. This new second edition of the Checklist of Painters is a transcription of the Witt index as it currently exists. The names of 66,000 artists, their dates, and their nationality (or school) are reproduced in alphabetical order. The Checklist of Painters is probably the most exhaustive work of its kind in existence; it now lists all painters (known by art historians) to have lived and worked from the year 1200 to 1994.

Historians agree: the diary of Léon Werth (1878-1955) is one of the most precious--and readable--pieces of testimony ever written about life in France under Nazi occupation and the Vichy regime. Werth was a free-spirited and unclassifiable writer. He is the author of eleven novels, art and dance criticism, acerbic political reporting, and memorable personal essays. He was Jewish, and left Paris in June 1940 to hide out in his wife's country house in Saint-Amour, a small village in the Jura Mountains. His short memoir 33 Days recounts his struggle to get there. Pierre de la Rue and Musical Life at the Habsburg-Burgundian Court
For twenty-four or more years composer Pierre de la Rue (d. 1518) provided music for one of the leading musical institutions of his day, the grande chapelle of the Habsburg-Burgundian court. Serving successive rulers Maximilian I, Philip the Fair, Juana of Castile, Marguerite of Austria, and the future Charles V, La Rue surpassed a dozen composer colleagues in his creation of polyphony to meet the needs of the court and its extravagant liturgy. This study, the first ever in English, traces La Rue's life and career, explores aspects of his compositional output, and recounts the reawakening of modern scholarship to his unique contributions.
