Uncertainty quantification for wave propagation and flow problems with random data

In this thesis we study partial differential equations with random inputs. The effects that different boundary conditions with random data and uncertain geometries have on the solution are analyzed. Further, comparisons and couplings between different uncertainty quantification methods are performed. The numerical simulations are based on provably strongly stable finite difference formulations based on summation-by-parts operators and a weak implementation of boundary and interface conditions. The first part of this thesis treats the construction of variance reducing boundary conditions. It is shown how the variance of the solution can be manipulated by the choice of boundary conditions, and...

Uncertainty Quantification In Computational Science: Theory And Application In Fluids And Structural Mechanics

During the last decade, research in Uncertainty Quantification (UC) has received a tremendous boost, in fluid engineering and coupled structural-fluids systems. New algorithms and adaptive variants have also emerged. This timely compendium overviews in detail the current state of the art of the field, including advances in structural engineering, along with the recent focus on fluids and coupled systems. Such a strong compilation of these vibrant research areas will certainly be an inspirational reference material for the scientific community.

Computational Fluid Dynamics 2006

The International Conference on Computational Fluid Dynamics (ICCFD) is the merger of the International Conference on Numerical Methods in Fluid Dynamics, ICNMFD (since 1969) and International Symposium on Computational Fluid Dynamics, ISCFD (since 1985). It is held every two years and brings together physicists, mathematicians and engineers to review and share recent advances in mathematical and computational techniques for modeling fluid dynamics. The proceedings of the 2006 conference (ICCFD4) held in Gent, Belgium, contain a selection of refereed contributions and are meant to serve as a source of reference for all those interested in the state of the art in computational fluid mechanics.

Computational Fluid Dynamics 2008

We are delighted to present this book which contains the Proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on Computational Fluid Dynamics (ICCFD5), held in Seoul, Korea from July 7 through 11, 2008. The ICCFD series has established itself as the leading international conference series for scientists, mathematicians, and engineers specialized in the computation of fluid flow. In ICCFD5, 5 Invited Lectures and 3 Keynote Lectures were delivered by renowned researchers in the areas of innovative modeling of flow physics, innovative algorithm development for flow simulation, optimization and control, and advanced multidisciplinary - plications. There were a total of 198 contributed abstracts sub...

Proceedings of the 3rd International Seminar on Non-Ideal Compressible Fluid Dynamics for Propulsion and Power

This book contains a collection of the main contributions from the third edition of the NICFD conference, organized by the Special Interest Group on Non-Ideal Compressible Fluid Dynamics (SIG-49). It provides insight on the latest research findings in the field of NICFD that are relevant to a number of engineering applications related to the conversion of renewable and waste energy sources, like organic Rankine cycles, supercritical CO2 cycle power plants, combustors operating with supercritical fluids, and heat pumps. The various chapters of the book document research encompassing theoretical, computational, and experimental aspects of the gas dynamics of non-ideal reactive and non-reactive flows and their impact for the design of internal flow components (turbomachinery, heat exchangers, combustors). Since the accurate calculation of fluid thermo-physical properties is of great concern in NICFD, all the chapters address this problem by describing state-of-the-art models for the characterization of the properties of pure fluids and mixtures.

Finite Volumes for Complex Applications X—Volume 2, Hyperbolic and Related Problems

This volume comprises the second part of the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Finite Volumes for Complex Applications, FVCA, held in Strasbourg, France, during October 30 to November 3, 2023. The Finite Volume method, and several of its variants, is a spatial discretization technique for partial differential equations based on the fundamental physical principle of conservation. Recent decades have brought significant success in the theoretical understanding of the method. Many finite volume methods are also built to preserve some properties of the continuous equations, including maximum principles, dissipativity, monotone decay of the free energy, asymptotic stability, or ...

Scientists and engineers use computer simulations to study relationships between a model's input parameters and its outputs. However, thorough parameter studies are challenging, if not impossible, when the simulation is expensive and the model has several inputs. To enable studies in these instances, the engineer may attempt to reduce the dimension of the model's input parameter space. Active subspaces are an emerging set of dimension reduction tools that identify important directions in the parameter space. This book describes techniques for discovering a model's active subspace and proposes methods for exploiting the reduced dimension to enable otherwise infeasible parameter studies. Readers will find new ideas for dimension reduction, easy-to-implement algorithms, and several examples of active subspaces in action.
