This book presents for the first time a collective examination of the issue of audience in relation to Joyce's work and the cultural moments of its reception. While many of the essays gathered in this volume are concerned with particular readers and readings of Joyce's work, they all, individually and generally, gesture at something broader than a specific act of reception. Joyce's Audiences is an important narrative of the cultural receptions of Joyce but it is also an exploration of the author's own fascination with audiences, reflecting a wider concern with reading and interpretation in general. Twelve essays by an international cast of Joyce critics deal with: the censorship and promotion of Ulysses; the 'plain reader' in modernism; Richard Ellmann's influence on Joyce's reputation; the implied audiences of Stephen Hero and Portrait; Borges's relation with Joyce; the study of Joyce in Taiwan; the promotion of Joyce in the U.S.; the complaint that there is insufficient time to read Joyce's work; the revisions to "Work in Progress" that respond to specific reviews; strategies of critical interpretation; Joyce and feminism; and the 'belated' readings of post-structuralism.
Raymond Williams (1921-1988) was one of the most original and influential thinkers of the post-war period. Many know him for his work on mass culture and his left-wing literary criticism, yet he is also the author of six novels, set in his native Welsh border country. This area was central to all of Williams' work and it seems liekly that his novels meant more to him than his other writing. This is the first critical study of the novels: Border Country, Second Generation, The Fight for Manod, The Volunteers, Loyalties and People of the Black Mountains. In it Tony Pinkney sees the novels as the battleground of political and cultural forces, particularly modernism, realism and postmodernism. In these books, he contends, Williams found a way to dramatise the pressures which society bears upon us, and the ways in which we might alter that society. His close reading of the novels is an invaluable guide to them, and to their author.

This book gathers together thirteen interviews with William Morris which appeared in newspapers or journals between 1885 and 1896, the year of his death. Taken as a whole, the interviews give us a vivid sense of Morris as he appeared to his contemporaries: of his range of activities and preoccupations, his places of work and leisure, his clothes, gestures, moods and phrases. In these interviews we see Morris to be intellectually restless, constantly pressing forward into new fields of artistic endeavour, and always relating these to the wider politics of his society.

This volume of essays by scholars in the field of English and American studies brings together a variety of perspectives on the utopian literature originating from cultural communities from 1790-1910. Ranging from the Lunar society to the Nationalist movement, and from the Transcendentalists to the Indian Monday Club the fifteen peer-reviewed articles examine a wide range of contexts in which utopian literature was written, and will be of interest to scholars in the field of cultural and literary studies alike. Moreover, the volume presents the reader with a unique overview of developments in Utopian thinking and literature throughout the long nineteenth century. Specific attention is paid to the transatlantic nature of cultural communities in which utopian writings were produced and read as well as to the colonial contexts of nineteenth-century utopian literature. As such, the collection offers a novel approach to a tradition of utopian writing that was essentially transcultural.
