The Transplant Patient

Organ transplantation is an essential element of treatment for a wide range of diseases, but despite increasing surgical success rates there remain many other issues affecting selection of patients and clinical outcome with which clinicians and patients themselves must be familiar. Originally published in 2000, this book reviews psychosocial, psychiatric and ethical aspects of organ transplantation in a uniquely authoritative way. Drawing heavily on the pioneering work of the Pittsburgh transplant team, it surveys the essentials of transplantation biology before engaging with a range of topics fundamental to the success of the procedure and the quality of life of recipients and donors alike. The interdisciplinary approach and the authority of the contributors will make this book of value to anyone with an interest in organ transplantation procedures.

Mechanisms of Intracellular Trafficking and Processing of ProProteins provides an in-depth discussion of the cellular organization and current views of the molecular mechanisms underlying the trafficking, sorting, and processing of various classes of proproteins. The book covers the mechanisms of pro-protein translocation across the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) membrane and subsequent transport to the Golgi apparatus, molecular sorting and retention signals involved in directing pro-proteins to various cellular compartments, and the specific enzymes mediating different posttranslational modification steps. It is the only book that covers the principles of intracellular trafficking and p...

This volume contains contributions from the Gulf International Conference in Applied Mathematics, held at the Gulf University for Science & Technology. The proceedings reflects the three major themes of the conference. The first of these was mathematical biology, including a keynote address by Professor Philip Maini. The second theme was computational science/numerical analysis, including a keynote address by Professor Grigorii Shishkin. The conference also addressed more general applications topics, with papers in business applications, fluid mechanics, optimization, scheduling problems and engineering applications, as well as a keynote by Professor Ali Nayfeh.

Impact of Cardiac Surgery on the Quality of Life

Georg Rodewald University of Hamburg Hamburg, Federal Republic of Germany Allen E. Willner Hillside Hospital Glen Oaks, NY In contrast to the initial years of cardiac surgery (37 years ago), there is now increasing interest in cerebral protection. Rodewald [1] in 1978 was among the first to point out the surgeon's concern with "psychopathological problems" and Taylor [2] in 1989 stressed that" ••• the awareness of the cerebral consequences of open heart surgery has risen considerably in recent years • • • " This book reviews the evidence for neurological, psychological, and neuropsycho logical reactions to cardiac surgery. In previous studies one problem is that small samples of patients were studied with different measuring instruments so that it was difficult to ma~e sense of inconsistent findings. Considerable controversy resulted with little ability to sort out discrepant findings. It appeared that a large multi center study using uniform measures might help clarify the picture.
